Good morning,

While full-home solar electric systems are vogue right now,
their price point is unattainable for most. While most
people can't afford the $20-30K cost of a full-home solar
electric system, a solar hot water system can cost between
$3-6K depending on where you live and how large your home
is.

Scroll down for more information on this energy and money
saving idea.

* Surprisingly, the best way to capture energy from the sun
is actually by using solar hot water. Solar hot water systems
are over three times more efficient than solar PV systems in
converting the sun's rays into energy you can use in your
house. And in many parts of the country hot water heating is
the second or third biggest energy sink in your house (after
heating and cooling), so this can lead to major savings.

* A backup water heater will ensure that hot water is at the
tap whether the sun shines or not. On a hot, sunny day, if
the sun has preheated the water to 140 F or more, the backup
heater uses no energy at all because the solar preheat temp-
erature is greater than the 120 F thermostat setting.

* Not all backup heaters use a tank. Keeping a tank of warm
water between uses can account for 15 percent or more of the
total energy expended for hot water. Tankless water heaters
eliminate this standby loss. Solar hot water systems and
tankless water heaters are a winning combination that can
save you 60 to 75 percent of your water heating bill.
