'Dear John' DVD

Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star in this melodrama
based on Nicholas Sparks' novel. The film was directed by
Lasse Hallström. The early part of the movie takes place
at the South Carolina seashore in the spring of 2001. John
(Tatum), a Special Forces soldier on leave, meets Savannah
(Seyfried), a college student on break. They fall in love,
but he has to return to duty. After 9/11, he ends up in
Afghanistan, but they write letters to each other. An im-
portant element of the story is John's relationship with
his father, who's passionate about collecting coins,
leading to a satisfying ending.

'The Road' DVD

A faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's bestselling
novel, this is a bleak post-apocalyptic drama. The story
takes place several years after some unspecified catastrophe
befell the world. The skies are always gray and rainy, and
the ground is barren. There are few human survivors, and
towns and most rural houses lie abandoned. The traveler can
go for days without encountering anyone. Through this deso-
late world a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son walk,
hoping to find a better life. They scavenge for old canned
goods and must avoid savage cannibals.

'True Blood' The Second Season DVD

This DVD set contains all 12 episodes that originally aired
beginning in June 2009 on HBO. The setting is the Louisiana
town of Bon Temps, and the main character is the human
waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who is in a romance
with a vampire (Stephen Moyer). The conceit here is that a
synthetic blood has been invented that enables vampires to
live openly in human society, but there is prejudice against
them. The second season involves the anti-vampire Fellowship
of the Sun in Dallas and Maryann (Michelle Forbes), a maenad
who almost gets control of Bon Temps.
