Minaj, Urban take 'Idol' judging seats

Rapper Nicki Minaj and country star Keith Urban will join Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey as judges on the 12th season of "American Idol," Fox Broadcasting said. The show's first-ever, four-judge panel will join host Ryan Seacrest in New York, where auditions take place Sunday and Monday, then travel to Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City, Fox said in a statement Sunday. The 12th season begins in January. Minaj is a multi-platinum singer, songwriter and rapper. Urban, married to actress Nicole Kidman, is a four-time Grammy award-winner. "With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our uncomparable host Ryan, we've put together one of the most exciting judging panels around," Mike Darnell, Fox Broadcasting Co.'s president of alternative entertainment, said in a statement. Minaj, 29, posted news about the New York auditions on her Twitter page Sunday: "New York auditions today & tomorrow! See ya there barbz!!!!!!!!!" Urban, 44, called it an "honor" to be part of the "Idol" family, People magazine reported. "I'm looking forward to working with everyone and to seeing the same passion that I have for music in all of the participants," he said. The announcement ends questions about the "Idol" judging panel following the departures of singer-actress Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler last year after two seasons.

James Taylor seeks $2M from Warner Bros.

U.S. singer-songwriter James Taylor has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Records seeking $2 million in damages for royalties from digital downloads. After an audit of Warner Bros. Records, Taylor said he discovered he's not receiving as much money from digital downloads of his songs as he thinks he should, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Taylor said a contract with Warner Bros. Records, his former record company, states he should receive 50 percent of royalties from licenses, though according to the lawsuit, the company denies a digital download is considered a license. Taylor's lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks damages of about $2 million for royalties for digital downloads, as well as underpayment for foreign receipts, budget sales and the unauthorized use of the musician's songs on compilation albums. He is also seeking damages for allegedly receiving a smaller-than-expected share of the record company's $110 million settlement with Napster, Variety reported.

'Game of Thrones' wins 6 creative Emmys

HBO's "Game of Thrones" took home the most awards at this year's Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles with six wins, for a total of 17 trophies for the network. The fantasy drama's awards included art direction, costumes, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects and single camera, non-prosthetic makeup at the Saturday ceremony held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, the Emmys said in a release. HBO received the most trophies of all networks at the Creative Arts Emmys, including three from "Boardwalk Empire," two each from "Hemingway & Gellhorn" and "George Harrison: Living in the Material World. The network got single wins from "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Game Change" and "Girls."

Discovery Channel's "Frozen Planet" received the second-highest number of awards for an individual series, with four wins for top nonfiction series, sound editing, cinematography and picture editing. Criminal to be sought in topless Kate case

British royals Prince William and his wife Kate aren't just suing over photos of her topless, they want criminal charges filed, their spokeswoman said Sunday. St. James Palace said lawyers for the duke and duchess of Cambridge are to register a criminal complaint Monday in Paris against the photographer who took the revealing photos while the royal couple were vacationing in France last month, the BBC reported. "We can confirm that a criminal complaint is to be made to the French Prosecution Department," a palace spokeswoman said. "It concerns the taking of photographs of the duke and duchess of Cambridge whilst on holiday and the publication of those photographs in breach of their privacy." Lawyers previously had said they would go to civil court damages and an injunction against the French magazine Closer that was the first to publish the photos. The Irish Daily Star has also published them and an Italian magazine, Chi, said it intended to do so. Northern and Shell, and Independent News and Media, the co-owners of the Daily Star, have condemned the publication of the topless photos, saying they had no editorial control over the newspaper. "I am very angry at the decision to publish these photographs and am taking immediate steps to close down the joint venture," said Richard Desmond, chairman of Northern and Shell. Closer magazine officials have said they see nothing wrong with running the photos. The royal couple currently are on a tour of Asia and the South Pacific.
