Doctor convicted for role in Michael Jackson's death released

The doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter in pop star Michael Jackson's death, was released from the Los Angeles County jail Monday, officials said. Murray left the jail under escort after serving two years of a four-year sentence, a sheriff's spokesman said. "It's been a long time coming," Murray's attorney, Valerie Wass, said shortly before he was released. "I'm so anxious for him to get out and get on with his life." Murray, 60, was sentenced in 2011 in Jackson's 2009 death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, which the doctor administered. Wass, said her client was eligible for parole, has challenged the conviction and will continue to do so, the Los Angeles Times reported. The doctor wants the verdict overturned because of insufficient evidence. If that occurred, he would be allowed to practice medicine again in California. Wass also filed on other grounds that wouldn't necessarily allow Murray to practice medicine, the Times said. A jury in Los Angeles this month found concert promoter AEG Live not liable in Jackson's death, ending a civil trial that included testimony about the entertainer's health problems, his struggles with drugs and his attempt at a comeback tour.

Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie diagnosed with cancer

Fleetwood Mac says bassist John McVie has been diagnosed with liver cancer. The group is canceling the Australian and New Zealand leg of their tour. "Fleetwood Mac, who has just completed the European leg of their phenomenally successful worldwide tour, has announced the cancellation of their upcoming 14 date tour of Australia and New Zealand," the group said Sunday in a statement posted on Facebook. "John McVie, one of the co-founding and original members of Fleetwood Mac is now scheduled to be in treatment for cancer during that period of time," the statement continued. "We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best." The band went on tour this year after releasing their first new material in April since 2003's "Say You Will," Billboard magazine said.

LOOSE LIPS:
"He did it in a very traditional way. He got down on one knee after renting out an entire baseball stadium in San Francisco. And then gave her a 15-carat diamond ring. 15 carats. That's bigger than their baby." - Ellen DeGeneres, on Kanye West's extravagant wedding proposal to Kim Kardashian, on her daytime talk show

Jay-Z defends relationship with Barneys after alleged racial profiling

Rapper Jay-Z issued a statement defending his collaboration with Barneys New York after two black customers said they were racially profiled at the store. Derick Bowers, a fan of the rapper, started a petition on Change.org, calling for Jay-Z to end his relationship with the high-end department store, saying if it weren't for the rapper's celebrity, he'd be treated the same way two black customers said they were treated, ABC News reported Saturday. A 21-year-old woman, Kayla Phillips, said police stopped her after she purchased $2,500 handbag from the store, accusing her of paying for it with a stolen pre-paid debit card. She wasn't charged, but Phillips recently came forward with her story after a 19-year-old man said police arrested him for suspected credit card fraud after he bought a $350 belt from Barneys. The man, Trayon Christian, wasn't charged and was released, but said he was unfairly targeted because of the color of his skin. Jay-Z is in collaboration with Barneys to create a collection of high-end merchandise, a portion of the proceeds from which are slated to go to scholarships for students in need, ABC News reported. "The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn't want to make without the full facts," the rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, wrote on his website. "Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn't hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education," he said.
