Greetings,

This is a good week for DVD releases. While there is plenty
of action to go around, there is also the dry-humor drama
'Barney's Version' for mature audiences, and the fantasy teen romance 'Beastly' starring Vanessa Hudgens.

'Barney's Version' DVD

Paul Giamatti won a Golden Globe for his performance as the title character in this comedy-drama based on Mordecai Richler's 1997 novel. The film covers four decades in the life of irascible Barney Panofsky (Giamatti), who was raised in the Jewish section of Montreal as the son of a policeman (Dustin Hoffman). Barney leads the bohemian life in 1970s Rome, where he marries and loses his free-spirited first wife (Rachelle Lefevre). He returns to Canada, and at his wedding to a Jewish princess (Minnie Driver), he falls for his classy third wife (Rosamund Pike), who leaves him and marries another (Bruce Greenwood).

But she turns out to be a witch and magically transforms his appearance radically, giving him tattoos and a bald head. 'Sucker Punch' DVD

Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), this is a garish,
over-the-top action fantasy. It's visually dazzling with
loud, pounding music on the soundtrack and features five
hot babes (Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone,
Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung) attired in fetishistic
outfits. Framed for murder by her evil stepfather, a young
woman is locked up in a mental institution and scheduled for a lobotomy in five days. She retreats into a brothel fantasy, imagining that she and four other women embark upon a quest to do five things that will enable them to achieve freedom.
