Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia.

An active athlete and lover of the arts, Low wanted to teach young girls that they really could do anything, if they just stepped out of the roles that society had built for them as women.

Although Low decided to start the Girl Scouts after meeting Boy Scouts founder Sir Robert Baden-Powell in 1911, the two organizations are in no way affiliated.

Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the US Congress on March 16, 1950.

Today, there are 2.6 million Girl Scouts--1.8 million girl members and 800,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

Famous Girl Scout alums include Taylor; Swift, Mariah Carey, Abigail Breslin, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dakota Fanning, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, and former Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice. Seventy-six percent of female U.S. senators and Fifty-two percent of women serving in the U.S. House of Representatives are Girl Scout alums.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the world. Girl Scouts sell about 200 million boxes of cookies-nearly $800 million
worth-during each cookie season.
