The film is a thriller, even though it's set in the world of a pro- fessional ballet company whose home is New York's Lincoln Center. Portman portrays Nina Sayers, a driven ballerina who gets her shot at stardom in dancing the Swan Queen in a pro- duction of Swan Lake. Nina's technique is superb, but it's questionable whether she can capture her character's seduc- tive dark side. As she prepares for the role, it emerges that she has difficulty distinguishing reality from illusion. Also, she's the wife of Joe Wilson (Penn), formerly an ambassador, but now trying to get a consulting business going. But Plame's and Wilson's activities run afoul of the George W. Bush administration, which deliberately blows her cover, turning the couple's lives upside down.
