'Disney's A Christmas Carol' DVD

Written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, this adaptation
of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella stars Jim Carrey. As he
did in The Polar Express, Zemeckis again uses the motion-
capture technique. Carrey plays four roles: Ebenezer Scrooge
and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
Gary Oldman plays Bob Cratchit, Marley and Tiny Tim. The cast
also includes Colin Firth, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn,
Bob Hoskins and Fionnula Flanagan. The film creates a note-
worthy version of 19th-century London, and the story is
generally faithful to the source material.

'The Kids Are All Right' DVD

Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo star in this
critically acclaimed comedy that was cowritten and directed
by Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon, High Art). Nic (Bening)
and Jules (Moore) are a longtime lesbian couple, and Nic has
an 18-year-old daughter, while Jules has a 15-year-old son.
Both children were conceived via artificial insemination
using the same sperm donor. The teenagers discover that their
biological father was a man named Paul (Ruffalo), locate him
and invite him to meet their two moms. This goes well at
first, but eventually leads to complications.

'The Last Airbender' DVD

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this live-action
fantasy movie is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, an ani-
mated Nickelodeon TV series for children. The story takes
place in a world of four tribes, each with its own element:
air, water, earth, fire. There are a few people called
benders who have special powers employing their tribe's ele-
ment, for example, waterbenders, earthbenders, etc. There is
also one person, the Avatar, who can learn to bend all four
elements. This film and its projected sequels center on the
Avatar, who can bring harmony to a troubled world.
