Scientists identify 'memory' molecule

LEICESTER, England - Researchers in Britain say they've dis-
covered a molecular key to how the human brain learns, and
how it records and saves memories. Scientists at the Univers-
ity of Leicester have identified the chemical mechanism by
which memories are formed, a university release said Monday.
A key protein is involved in the brain's process of creating
and retaining memories, Andrew Tobin, a professor of cell
biology, said. "This protein is present in the part of the
brain in which memories are stored," Tobin said. "We have
found that in order for any memory to be laid down this
protein, called the M3-muscarinic receptor, has to be acti-
vated." The finding could have important implications for
the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Tobin said. Since one
of the major symptoms of Alzheimer's is memory loss, he
said, drugs designed to target the protein identified in
the study could lead to treatment options for the disease.

Study: New drugs may come from deep ocean

ORLANDA, Fla. - A drug to treat malaria, one of the world's
deadliest diseases, could come from sponges, sea worms
and other undersea creatures, a scientist says. Debopam
Chakrabarti of the University of Central Florida has ana-
lyzed samples of more than 2,500 marine organisms collected
near Florida's coast in hopes of finding a key to treating
malaria, the mosquito-borne illness that kills more than 1 -
million people worldwide annually, a university release
said Monday. UCF researchers conducted tests to evaluate
growth inhibitory properties of these samples for malaria
parasites. Early tests indicate about 300 of the organisms
sampled can kill the parasites, Chakrabarti said. "There is
a very good possibility that the answers to cancers, malaria
and other diseases may be found in the ocean," he said. "The
oceans cover 70 percent of the planet. Among 36 of the phyla
of life, 34 are found in marine environment, whereas the
land represents only 17 phyla, and we haven't even begun to
explore the oceans' depths." Research on drugs from marine
sources is taking place around the world, UCF said. A
Japanese study found a drug derived from sea sponges was
effective against breast, colon and urinary cancers, and
Australian scientists are diving on the Great Barrier Reef
to study organisms there. Chakrabarti says researchers will
continue analyzing samples during the next year. "If we can
find two or three good molecules that can be easily synthe-
sized in a lab and that can prevent malaria, I'd be very
happy," he said.

Bees may help fight deadly infections

GLASGOW, Scotland - Scientists looking for new treatments
to fight a deadly drug-resistant infection say they may have
found a new ally -- bees. A substance known as beeglue or
propolis, found in beehives, was found to be effective
against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a bac-
terium that causes several difficult-to-treat infections in
humans, a release Monday from Scotland's University of
Strathclyde said. "MRSA can have a devastating impact on
people who contract it and on their families, often com-
pounding illnesses they already have," said Dr. Veronique
Seidel, a lecturer in natural products chemistry at Strath-
clyde. "We investigated propolis because bees use it as an
antiseptic glue to seal gaps between honeycombs and preserve
their hives from microbial contamination," she said. "Beeglue
is also a natural remedy widely used in folk medicine for a
variety of ailments but little has been known until now about
its capacity to target MRSA," she said. "We will be taking
our research further to understand how active substances in
propolis work," Seidel said, "and to seek the treatments
which patients urgently require."

Simple blood test could examine fetus

ROME - A simple non-invasive blood test could replace inva-
sive diagnostic techniques in early pregnancy, Dutch re-
searchers say. Researchers at the Maastricht University
Medical Centre in the Netherlands say they are developing a
simple blood test capable of accurately detecting chromosomal
abnormalities in a developing fetus responsible for Down's
syndrome and other conditions, a university release said
Tuesday. Currently, the only way to make such determinations
is through amniocentesis or other invasive techniques that
carry the risk of triggering miscarriages, the release said.
Dr. Suzanna Frints, a clinical geneticist at Maastricht,
says molecular genetic probes can detect DNA belonging to
the fetus in blood samples taken from a pregnant woman. The
simple blood test could replace current diagnostic proce-
dures, said Frints, who is scheduled to address the annual
meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and
Embryology in Rome on Tuesday. "It is inexpensive compared
to the costs of invasive prenatal diagnosis, and could
easily be implemented at low cost, between 30-150 Euros
($35-$180) per kit per person, with a small apparatus in
every hospital in the world," Frints said. "Blood samples
can be taken during routine antenatal visits."

Substance may block cancer cell growth

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A substance produced when eating broccoli
and Brussels sprouts may block the growth of cancer cells,
U.S. researchers say. Scientists at the Ohio State University
Comprehensive Cancer Center say study evidence suggests the
substance, indole-3-carbinol, known as I3C, may have anti-
cancer effects, a university release said Tuesday. The lab-
oratory study discovered a connection between I3C and a mol-
ecule called Cdc25A, which is essential for cell division
and proliferation, the release said. "Cdc25A is present at
abnormally high levels in about half of breast cancer cases,
and it is associated with a poor prognosis," says study
leader Xianghong Zou, assistant professor of pathology at
the Ohio State University Medical Center. The study, pub-
lished in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, said I3C
destroyed the molecule and blocked the growth of breast
cancer cells. The molecule also occurs at abnormally high
levels in cancers of the prostate, liver, esophagus, endo-
metrium and colon, in non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and in other
diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Xianghong noted. "I3C
can have striking effects on cancer cells," he said, "and a
better understanding of this mechanism may lead to the use
of this dietary supplement as an effective and safe strategy
for treating a variety of cancers and other human diseases."
