Goodell expects player salaries to grow under restructured deal

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell predicts players' salaries
still will grow under a new labor agreement, even if their
share of revenue is reduced as owners have proposed.
Appearing Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation" hours before
the Super Bowl, Goodell said the owners need more money
to cover rising costs for international ventures and
infrastructure projects such as new stadiums. "You have
to invest in these stadiums that we're in today," Goodell
said. "You need to find new ways of creating revenue,
whether it's international or otherwise. And that takes
investment. And we need to make sure that the owners have
the capital to be able to do that. And then the pie grows,
and everyone benefits." The union has said management wants
players to reduce their share to 41 percent of applied
revenues from about 59 percent. Goodell counters that of
the $3.6 billion in incremental revenues since 2006,
players received $2.6 billion.

"We want to structure something that really is going to
lead us into the next decade in a way that's constructive,
so the players benefit, the teams benefit, and most of all,
the game," Goodell said. The league's current labor contract
expires in March 2011. NFL Players Association executive
director DeMaurice Smith said Thursday the chance of a
lockout next year is a "14" on a scale of 1 to 10.
"I don't agree with that," Goodell said. "The owners don't
win by having a lockout. Shutting down your business is not
good for anybody. And it's certainly not good for the players.
It's certainly not good for the fans." Addressing the issue
of concussions has been another priority for the commissioner,
and he said the league will continue to look for ways to
make the game safer. He didn't rule out the idea of getting
linemen out of their three-point stances to reduce the
ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.
"As you'll see tonight, you'll see a lot of players that
never get down in a three-point stance," Goodell said. "So
it's possible that would happen." While science is still
trying to determine the long-term effects of concussions,
Goodell said, the league has made progress in increasing
awareness about the severity of such injuries.

"For many years the culture had been quite different -- that
concussions weren't serious injuries," he said. "I think we
have changed that culture and made sure that people understand
they are serious, and they can have serious consequences if
they're not treated properly."

Warren Sapp charged with domestic battery in Miami Beach

Former football star Warren Sapp was arrested Saturday
following an alleged domestic violence incident at a Miami
Beach hotel, police said. Sapp was charged with one count
of misdemeanor domestic battery and is expected to appear
before a Miami-Dade County judge Sunday, Miami Beach police
spokesman Juan Sanchez said. Shortly after officials confirmed
the charge, the NFL Network, for which Sapp is an analyst,
said in an e-mail from spokesman Dennis Johnson that Sapp
wouldn't be part of Super Bowl coverage this weekend.

"We have been made aware of the arrest of Warren Sapp by the
Miami Beach Police Department," a network statement said.
"In light of these circumstances, Warren Sapp will not appear
on NFL Network while we review the matter." The domestic
violence allegation was reported around noon Saturday and
detectives interviewed Sapp later that day, Sanchez said.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning at the Shore
Club hotel, according to a police news release. A telephone
message left for Sapp's attorney was not immediately returned,
nor was an e-mail. Sanchez said Sapp was expected to be
transferred to Miami-Dade County jail Saturday.

Sapp, a former defensive tackle, played for the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders during his NFL career.
He was also once a contestant on ABC's "Dancing with the
Stars." Sapp was in South Florida as part of the NFL
Network's coverage of Sunday's Super Bowl between the
New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts.

Rice, Smith headline Hall of Fame class of 2010

All-time greats Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith led a class of
seven into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
The NFL's career receiving and rushing leaders were joined
in the Hall by John Randle, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson,
Floyd Little and Dick LeBeau. Little and LeBeau were elected
as senior committee nominees.

"I am just honored ... to stand up there with greatness," Rice
added before breaking down in tears. Rice and Smith both made
it in their first year of eligibility. They were elected a
day before the Super Bowl, a game they each won three times.

"This is almost perfect," Smith said. "I don't think even
Steven Spielberg could have written a script this nice."
They will be inducted into the Canton, Ohio, shrine on Aug. 7.

Nobody could stop Rice, the league's top pass catcher and
all-time touchdowns leader, when he played for San Francisco,
Oakland and Seattle. Rice made 1,549 catches for 22,895 yards,
had 14 1,000-yard seasons and scored 208 touchdowns.
Nor could they handle Smith, who rushed for 18,355 yards and
164 touchdowns for Dallas and Arizona. Like Rice, he won an
MVP award in the NFL's championship game.

And no one could deny them immediate entry into the Hall. A
nominee needs 80 percent approval from the 44 media members
who vote and they were slam-dunks.

President Obama predicts Colts victory in Super Bowl XLIV

President Barack Obama said Sunday that the Indianapolis Colts
"have to be favored" in the Super Bowl, even though he has a
"soft spot" for the New Orleans Saints. Obama's Super Bowl
prediction was based on his opinion that the Colts have
"perhaps the best quarterback in history."

"Peyton Manning is unbelievable," the president told CBS'
Katie Couric during a live pregame interview.

Still, Obama said he has a soft spot for New Orleans, "mainly
because of what the city has gone through over these last
several years" since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

Obama said he might be biased against the Colts since they
beat his hometown Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
