NFL wants a return to Mexico

The NFL is still eyeing a return to Mexico.
Arizona and San Francisco played the NFL's first regular-
season game outside the United States in Mexico in 2005,
followed two years later by a game in London between Miami
and the New York Giants. More trips to London have followed.
On Friday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Mexico remains
on the league's radar screen, noting that "it's good for the
NFL." Goodell also says the NFL isn't choosing London over
Mexico. He'd like to see games played in both cities, and
later in his state-of-the-NFL session Friday, also called
Japan and the Far East "an important market" for the league.

Goodell: Stallworth will be reinstated

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says Cleveland Browns wide
receiver Donte' Stallworth will be reinstated from his suspension
for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk. At his annual
Super Bowl-week news conference Friday, Goodell said Stallworth's
suspension will be lifted after the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Goodell said he met with Stallworth about a month ago, and
the receiver is "in a better place than he was." Goodell
said Stallworth recognizes what he did and has prepared
himself to return to the NFL. Stallworth spent 24 days in jail
for a DUI manslaughter conviction in the case. The accident
occurred last March in South Florida, and he was suspended
without pay last August.

Strahan says parties real draw of Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is just an afterthought for Michael Strahan.
The former Super Bowl champion says the real draw is the days
of partying leading up to Sunday's game. At a party Thursday,
he said: "By the time you get through the partying, who cares
about the game, to be honest with you." He added: "If you
party right, the game is the last thing you worry about, you
wake up in the fourth quarter." Strahan - now a Fox Sports
commentator - won with the New York Giants in 2008. He didn't
party during that Super Bowl but didn't feel like he missed
anything because he had been to so many Super Bowls before
that. Says Strahan: "If you focus enough and win the Super
Bowl, the party is after anyway."

Goodell says NFL likes OT rule

The NFL said again Friday that it likes the league's oft-
debated overtime rule. Commissioner Roger Goodell points to
this season's pair of overtime postseason games and called
them "two of the most exciting games we've had." Arizona
beat Green Bay in a wild 51-45 overtime game, and the New
Orleans Saints earned the right to play in Sunday's Super
Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts by beating Minnesota
in overtime in the NFC championship game. The NFL's sudden-
death overtime rule has long been debated, especially after
college football went to a system where both teams get the
ball at least once. Goodell says the NFL hasn't "been able
to find a better solution" even after talks with players
and coaches. A change may be possible, Goodell says, adding:
"But I wouldn't hold your breath."

Report: LT believes he's done in San Diego

LaDainian Tomlinson says he believes he has played his last
game with the San Diego Chargers. The running back told The
San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday that he has thought for
a while he would be let go by the Chargers. His comments come
after more than a month of saying he did not know what would
happen. The NFL's most valuable player in 2006 has two years
remaining on his contract. He is due a $2 million roster
bonus March 5 and would be paid $5 million in total salary
in 2010. Tomlinson tells the newspaper he doesn't know when
the Chargers will release him and that his agent, Tom Condon,
might call the club to expedite the process. Condon didn't
immediately respond to a phone message from the AP. "All
discussions about the future will take place later this
month. No decisions have been made," Chargers spokesman
Bill Johnston wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
Tomlinson has become one of the most beloved athletes in
San Diego history during a nine-year career but his
production and speed have been decreasing. Tomlinson had
730 yards on 223 carries for an average of 3.3 yards per
carry this past season, all career lows. The lower numbers
were due in part to the Chargers relying more on their
high-octane passing game, as well as Tomlinson missing
the second and third games with a sprained ankle.

Caldwell says Freeney still improving

Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell sounded optimistic Friday
that defensive end Dwight Freeney could play against the
New Orleans Saints in Sunday's Super Bowl. "He's trending
in the right direction," Caldwell said at his final pre-
Super Bowl news conference. Freeney has been receiving
treatment several times daily since arriving in South
Florida last week, trying to speed up the recovery after
tearing a ligament in his right ankle during the Colts'
AFC championship game victory over the New York Jets.

Earlier this week, Freeney said he believes he's improving.
However, he still hasn't practiced with the team. "He's
getting better, but we'll see," Caldwell said. "It's
still a day-to-day situation." Freeney isn't the only
injury concern for the Colts. Offensive lineman Ryan Lilja
has been bothered by a sore back and couldn't practice
Thursday, but Caldwell said the team expects one of
Peyton Manning's top blockers to be ready for the game.
It's still wait-and-see on cornerback Jerraud Powers and
his ailing left foot. Caldwell revealed Friday that Powers
had "an internal fixation of a fractured foot," which
typically means a plate or screws were inserted to hold
a fracture in place. Still, Caldwell sounded upbeat.
"He feels that he's going to be able to play," he said.
"It's just kind of up to the doctors ... if he's able to
run and run without any inhibitions whatsoever. He's
moving along and moving well and we'll see."
