Porter, Freeney, Ryan and More...

Injured Freeney still hopes to play in Super Bowl

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney still hopes to play in the
Super Bowl despite a torn ligament in his right ankle.
"Hopefully, towards the end of the week it starts to get
better," Freeney said at Tuesday's media day. "The decision
will come later on in the week. It's kind of early now."
An All-Pro player, Freeney wore a pair of flip-flops to
the morning session. His injured ankle was unwrapped.
"Very discouraging" was how he described his inability to
practice for Sunday's NFL title game against the New Orleans
Saints. "The competitor in me says they'll never stop me from
being on the field," he said with a laugh before adding:
"There's some pain there definitely, with throwing everything
at it, all types of techniques, to find the best thing to get
this thing as good as possible. You name it, I've probably
done it." Freeney injured the ankle in the AFC championship
game against the New York Jets and said the chances of
working out later this week weren't good. He's the only starter
on either team who might miss the game because of injury.
Freeney said he's enlisted the help of chiropractors, slept
in an oxygen chamber, used ice, regular therapy and anything
else team doctors prescribed, to try to get the ankle to heal.
Despite everything, his teammates still believe Freeney will
be on the field Sunday. Defensive lineman Raheem Brock, who
would replace Freeney in the lineup, took it a step further.
"I think he'll be back and playing third downs. And I think
he'll be effective, until I see something different," Brock
said. Freeney, the former league sacks champ, led the Colts
with 13 1/2 sacks and is considered the team's defensive
leader.

4 injured in stage collapse at Super Bowl site

Four people were injured when a small stage collapsed outside
Sun Life Stadium, where the Super Bowl is being played this
weekend. A Miami-Dade Fire Rescue news release says all four
victims were taken to area hospitals Tuesday night. Two were
transported by helicopter and the others by ambulance. The
injuries were not considered life-threatening. The Indianapolis
Colts and the New Orleans Saints are set to play Super
Bowl XLIV at the stadium on Sunday. A message seeking further
comment from a fire department spokesman wasn't immediately
returned.

Jets fine coach Ryan $50,000 for obscene gesture

Jets coach Rex Ryan was fined $50,000 by the team Tuesday
for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event
last weekend. The team's decision came after a smiling Ryan
was caught on a cell phone camera flipping his middle finger
at a fan during the competition in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday
night. The image of Ryan quickly spread across the Internet
and made its way onto the back pages of New York tabloids.
Ryan apologized the next day, calling his actions "stupid
and inappropriate." "I wouldn't accept that type of behavior
from one of the coaches or players and it's unacceptable from
me," he said in a statement. General manager Mike Tannenbaum
had said the organization was disappointed and would address
the matter internally.

The coach also could be fined by the NFL under its personal
conduct policy. Commissioner Roger Goodell fined Tennessee
Titans owner Bud Adams $250,000 for making an obscene
gesture to fans in November, but that was during an
NFL game. Ryan led the Jets to the AFC championship game in
Indianapolis in his first year as an NFL head coach.
He made headlines throughout the season with his confident
statements, including saying the Jets should be the favorite
to win the Super Bowl when the playoffs began.

When he was hired by the Jets last year, he boldly declared
they would meet the president someday as Super Bowl champions.
Ryan also said he didn't come to New York to kiss New England
coach Bill Belichick's championship rings. He also had a
playful feud with Miami linebacker Channing Crowder, saying
he had walked over tougher guys while going to fights. That
made Ryan a likely target of booing fans during a TV interview
at the MMA event in the Bank Atlantic Center, the Florida
Panthers' home arena. "I want to just tell everybody in
Miami, 'Hey, we're coming to beat you twice next year,"'
Ryan said during the ringside interview.

The Dolphins beat the Jets in both meetings this season.

Eagles sign punter Brooks to 2-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed punter Durant Brooks to
a two-year contract, giving incumbent Sav Rocca competition.
Brooks, a sixth-round pick by Washington in 2008, played six
games with the Redskins. He had a gross average of 39.6 yards
on 26 punts. Brooks spent time on Green Bay's practice squad
in '08 and was released by the Packers last preseason.
Brooks played two seasons at Georgia Tech and won the Ray Guy
Award given to the top college punter in 2007. Rocca has been
Philadelphia's punter the last three seasons. He had a net
average of 38.3 yards per punt last season.

Keenan McCardell is Redskins' new receivers coach

Longtime NFL wideout Keenan McCardell will be the receivers
coach for the Washington Redskins. McCardell was hired Tuesday
as the replacement for Stan Hixon, who was not retained by
new coach Mike Shanahan. Hixon was hired Monday as Buffalo
Bills receivers coach. McCardell caught 883 passes, 13th on
the career list, over 17 seasons. He had his most productive
stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but spent his final year
as a player with the Redskins, catching 22 passes for 256
yards in 2007. This is McCardell's first full-time coaching
job in the NFL. He completed a Bill Walsh Minority Coaching
Fellowship with the New York Giants during training camp in
2009 and last month coached receivers in the East-West
Shrine Game.

Unhappy Porter wants Dolphins to release him

Joey Porter says he wants to be released by the Miami Dolphins
because he was frustrated about his reduced role last season
and doubts his relationship with coach Tony Sparano can be
repaired. Porter told the Dolphins' flagship radio station
Tuesday he wants to be waived rather than traded so he can
join another team as an every-down linebacker.

"Knowing I'm unhappy and bringing that negative vibe to a team,
you don't want me coming to the stadium with that look on my
face, 'Why am I here?"' Porter told WQAM. The four-time Pro Bowl
linebacker's campaign to be released went national with an
appearance Monday on ESPN. A pledge from the Dolphins that he
can play full time in 2010 is unlikely, and he told WQAM that
wouldn't salvage the situation. "I wouldn't believe them," he said.=

Porter said as his role diminished last season, he talked
with Sparano only on Sundays and stopped speaking with
football czar Bill Parcells or general manager Jeff Ireland.
Porter was unhappy about being replaced by pass-rush specialist
Cameron Wake in some situations. "I'm an every-down player,"
Porter said. "I'm supposed to be out on the field when the
game's on the line. I was on the sideline in the fourth
quarter cheering. ...

"My mind wouldn't be there because I'm frustrated that I'm on
the sideline. It's hard for me to accept that after being in
the Pro Bowl just a year ago. Now all of a sudden I'm taking
a back seat - for who and for what?" Porter said he saw less
playing time after Sparano held him out of a midseason game
at Tampa Bay. The only reason given at the time was a "coach's
decision." "It was because I went out to get something to eat
from 9 to 10:30" two nights before the game, Porter said.
"I've never heard that before - telling a grown man what
to do on a Friday night."

Porter led the AFC in 2008 with 17 1/2 sacks. His sack total
this season fell to nine, still the Dolphins' high.
"Outside linebacker? I'm the best one we've got. Period. Why
should I be switching with any of those guys?" Porter said.
"Being 32, I don't have time to be playing childish games.
If you want to put Cameron Wake in the game, go ahead and
good luck to you. Let me go find a job somewhere else."
