NFL director of football operations Davey dies at age 58

Tim Davey, the NFL's director of football operations, has
died. He was 58. Davey was an employee of the New York Jets
and the NFL for a total of 33 years. He died Wednesday.
"Tim was beloved by all of us for his tremendous work ethic
and passion for his job and the NFL," league commissioner
Roger Goodell said Thursday. Goodell first worked with Davey
in 1983, when the now-commissioner interned with the Jets.
Davey was with the Jets from 1974 to 1988 as an athletic trainer.
Davey joined the NFL in 1991 in the league's game operations
department. He supervised the logistics for stadium
communications systems for teams and sideline personnel.
He also served as the league's coordinator of stadium
operations and field matters, and he was in charge of
operations at AFC and NFC championship games and led Pro Bowl
operations, working closely with the coaching staffs and
players. "Everyone that knew Tim loved him for many different
reasons," Goodell said. "His talent, his commitment to doing
the best possible job in anything he did, his sense of humor,
his love of sports, kids, family, and the fact that you could
always count on him as a colleague and friend."

Jets LB Harris still can't practice on ankle, but coach hopes
he'll play

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is optimistic that David Harris
will play in this weekend's AFC wild-card playoff game at
Cincinnati despite the linebacker missing a second consecutive
day of practice Wednesday with a sprained right ankle.
"I think he'll go just because of the guy he is," Ryan said
of Harris. "I know he's jogging on it, so hopefully he'll be
able to practice maybe, but more importantly, play." Harris,
the Jets' leading tackler, wasn't on the field for practice or
on the stationary bikes Wednesday while the team worked outdoors.
"It's a big concern," Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine
said. "I know it's encouraging he's starting to run a little
bit today, but at this time of year, you want to be healthy
and all guns-a-blazin'. For us to have one of our key guys a
game-time decision is an issue for us." Harris, one of the
leaders of the NFL's top-ranked defense, injured the ankle
during the first half of the regular-season finale against
the Bengals on Sunday. He watched from the sideline in the
second half. Harris' backup, Ryan Fowler, was limited in
practice after taking a blow to the head during the 37-0
victory over the Bengals on Sunday. If either Harris or Fowler
can't go, Kenwin Cummings would make his NFL debut in their place.
Jets running back Thomas Jones, who set a career high with
1,402 rushing yards, was a full participant in practice
despite being listed on the injury report with a knee ailment.
"He's going to play, you know that," Ryan said. "He just had
a little swelling in the knee." Wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery
(hip), defensive end Shaun Ellis (knee) and cornerback
Donald Strickland (quadriceps) were limited, and punter
Steve Weatherford (right hamstring) was a full participant
after resting Tuesday.

Seahawks veteran defenders Grant, Kerney having surgeries

Seattle Seahawks safety Deon Grant is having wrist surgery,
and defensive end Patrick Kerney will undergo elbow surgery.
Each player hopes it's not his last act with the team.
The Seahawks announced Thursday that both veterans were
scheduled to have their operations later in the day. Grant, 30,
played the last six games with a cast over his left wrist.
He said this week that Dr. Carlton Keck, a specialist in
Seattle, was to place pins in his wrist and reconstruct a
torn ligament. The team expects Grant to be fully recovered
by late April or May. Kerney, 33, is having surgery to remove
loose cartilage and bone fragments in his left elbow. The team
said in a statement it considers the procedure routine and that
Kerney's recovery time should be four to six weeks. Neither
veteran is sure to return to Seattle, which will rebuild with
a new general manager following a second consecutive losing
season. Grant is part of a secondary that often has been
overmatched against better passing offenses the last two
seasons, especially as Seattle's pass rush -- which Kerney
leads -- became anemic. Grant said Monday that he wanted to
return to the Seahawks, who signed him as a free agent from
the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007. Grant has three years
remaining on his non-guaranteed contract, at salaries of
$4 million, $6 million and $7 million each season through
2012. Grant might have to re-negotiate those numbers to stay.
"There's definitely going to be changes," he said. "Contract-
wise, you know, I'm supposed to be here. We'll see." Kerney
was an All-Pro with 14.5 sacks in 2007, his first season with
the Seahawks after he left the Atlanta Falcons and signed a
six-year, $39.5 million contract that included $19.5 million
guaranteed. But Kerney had just five sacks in an injury-
plagued 2008 when the Seahawks finished 4-12 and just five
more this season as Seattle went 5-11. The Seahawks tied for
26th in the NFL in sacks in 2009, with just 28 in 16 games.
Kerney said after Sunday's season finale that he "absolutely"
would like to come back to Seattle next season, but he added,
"That's not up to me." "This year, (I) didn't create enough
production for this team, there's no doubt about that," he
said. Seahawks coach Jim Mora said the only other player
scheduled for surgery was backup wide receiver Mike Hass,
who dislocated his shoulder in the only game he played this
season, two weeks ago at Green Bay. Mora also said he expects
to know by March whether Walter Jones will play for the
Seahawks in 2010. The six-time All-Pro left tackle, who
turns 36 this month, hasn't played since Thanksgiving Day
2008 following microfracture surgery on his left knee.
Jones is headed back to Florida for more rehabilitation and
says he hopes to give it "one last run" with the team that
drafted him sixth overall in 1997.

Steelers fire coordinator Ligashesky after poor special-teams play

Steelers special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky became the
second assistant coach fired by coach Mike Tomlin in the last
two days. Ligashesky lost his job Thursday following a poor
season by the Steelers' kick-coverage units. They allowed four
kickoff-return touchdowns, matching the 1998 Minnesota Vikings
for the most permitted by an NFL team since 1994. The Steelers
ranked 30th in kickoff coverage and 24th in punt-return coverage.
Ligashesky, a former Pitt assistant, joins offensive line coach
Larry Zierlein in being fired since the Steelers (9-7) failed
to make the playoffs one season after winning the Super Bowl.
Quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson also decided to retire.
Until this week, Tomlin had made no changes to his coaching
staff since it was assembled in 2007.

Fans will rent billboard asking Bills to hire Cowher as coach

With the Bills in the midst of a coaching search, that's the
message fans intend to send team owner Ralph Wilson on a
billboard to be displayed in Buffalo. Organizer Patrick Moran
said Thursday that an Internet campaign has raised more than
the $1,125 needed to rent an electronic billboard for a week,
starting Monday. It would feature the words, "Dear Mr. Wilson,
we want this guy," superimposed over a picture of Cowher, who
won a Super Bowl as the Pittsburgh Steelers' coach. Moran also
helped organize a campaign in November, when a billboard was
rented demanding that Wilson clean house. The Bills haven't
commented on their coaching search since firing Dick Jauron
in November, but Cowher has been widely mentioned as a candidate.
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported that the Bills reached
out to Cowher more than a month ago. But Cowher didn't want to
talk to the Bills during the season. Minnesota Vikings
defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was scheduled to
interview with the Bills on Thursday.
