Chargers, Rams, Browns and More...

Chargers place Holt on IR, sign Thomas

The San Diego Chargers placed linebacker James Holt on
injured reserve with a shoulder injury on Tuesday and
signed Dontarrious Thomas, who played this season in the
United Football League. Holt was hurt in Sunday's regular-
season finale against Washington and will undergo surgery.
He was used mostly on special teams, with nine tackles in
nine games. Thomas has played in 63 games in five NFL
seasons, including 10 starts, with Minnesota and San
Francisco. He hasn't played in the NFL since the end of
the 2008 season. This season, he was the leading tackler for
the California Redwoods of the UFL. He's been a special teams
contributor throughout his career. General manager A.J. Smith
didn't return calls seeking comment. The AFC West champion
Chargers (13-3) earned the No. 2 playoff seed and a first-
round bye.

Rams rookie guard injures left knee

St. Louis Rams rookie guard Roger Allen III tore a ligament
in his left knee in the season finale, spoiling his first
career start. Allen signed with the Rams as an undrafted free
agent from Missouri Western, a Division II school, in April.
He was inactive for 13 games and made his debut at Arizona in
week 16. Allen was injured in the first half of Sunday's
28-6 loss to San Francisco.

Mangini still coaching Browns

Browns coach Eric Mangini held onto his job for at least
another day. New team president Mike Holmgren said Tuesday -
his first official day running the team - that Mangini, who
had an eventful first season, has a legitimate chance to
return with the Browns. Holmgren only met briefly with Mangini
on Tuesday. Holmgren said he will have "The Meeting" with
Mangini on Wednesday and hopes to have a decision made by the
end of the week on the coach's future. Holmgren also said
that Philadelphia general manager Tom Heckert will interview
for Cleveland's GM opening. Heckert was granted permission
to interview with the Browns last season, but the team instead
hired George Kokinis, who was fired in November.

Saints place defensive end Grant on IR

The New Orleans Saints on Tuesday placed Charles Grant on
injured reserve and will have to make their playoff run
without their starting defensive end. The Saints said that
Grant, who anchored the left side of the Saints line, has a
triceps injury that will end the season for the eight-year
veteran. Grant had surgery to repair the torn muscle, the
Saints said on Tuesday. Grant, one of the few starters the
Saints did not rest during the final game of the season, was
hurt in New Orleans' 23-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He
missed the last eight games of last season with a similar
injury. The 31-year-old Grant started every game this year
and was credited with 53 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and a forced
fumble. In a related transaction, the Saints re-signed veteran
defensive end Paul Spicer. Spicer is a 10-year NFL veteran
who first joined the Saints as a free agent last spring and
played in all four preseason games before being released in
the final preseason cutdown. New Orleans (13-3) has a first-
round bye in the playoffs. The Saints lost the last three
games of the season, including an overtime defeat at home
to Tampa Bay. By the end of the regular season, the defense
had slipped from the top 10 to No. 25 in yards allowed, the
lowest ranking of any of the 12 playoff teams. Although
several starters rested in the meaningless loss to Carolina
on Sunday, the defense gave up 1,725 yards in the previous
four games, an average of 431.2 per contest. The Detroit
Lions, who finished last in the NFL in total defense for
the season, allowed 392.1. Injuries have contributed to the
defense's decline, but with the rest the bye week provides,
the Saints hoped all 11 starters would be healthy for the
playoffs. Coach Sean Payton gave the Saints nearly a week
off to clear their heads before they return to practice for
double sessions Saturday and Sunday to begin preparing for
a divisional playoff game. New Orleans will open on Jan. 16
in the Louisiana Superdome against Philadelphia, Green Bay
or Arizona, depending on this weekend's first-round results.

Cardinals sign 2 from Giants, drop linebacker

The Arizona Cardinals have signed fullback Nehemiah Broughton
and defensive end Jeremey Clark from the New York Giants'
practice squad. The team also has released linebacker Pago
Togafau and placed defensive end Jason Banks on injured reserve.
Broughton joins the Cardinals after spending the entire 2009
season on New York's practice squad. He was with the Minnesota
Vikings in the preseason until being released on Sept. 5.
Clark appeared in four games with the Giants in 2008 and
made three tackles and a half-sack. Clark spent the past
five weeks with the Giants' practice squad. He was waived
on Sept. 5 by the team, then re-signed later in the year.
