Titans' C. Johnson sets record for scrimmage yards

Chris Johnson set the NFL record for yards from scrimmage in
a season on Sunday, the first of two league milestones he
reached in the Tennessee Titans' season finale. The second-year
running back caught a pass in the flat for a 9-yard gain in the
second quarter Sunday at Seattle to break Marshall Faulk's
record of 2,429 scrimmage yards set in 1999. Titans coach
Jeff Fisher got the ball from a game official and tossed
it to a team staffer. In the fourth quarter, Johnson became
the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in
a season.

Schaub to stay in Houston, get bonus

-The Houston Texans will exercise an option in Matt Schaub's
contract that will give the quarterback a $10 million bonus
and extend his contract for the next three years. Schaub signed
a six-year contract when he was traded from the Atlanta Falcons
three seasons ago and the Texans had until March to decide if they
wanted to exercise the option to keep him in Houston. Owner
Bob McNair said the team plans to do that and the decision
"wasn't difficult at all." "He's really been one of the best
quarterbacks in the league this year," McNair said. "We could
see how good he was and he just needed the opportunity and this
year we were able to protect him better and keep him on the
field and he put the numbers up there." Schaub led the league
in yards passing with a franchise-best 4,770 in helping Houston
(9-7) to its first winning record with a victory over New
England on Sunday. His 4,770 yards are the sixth-most in
NFL history. The Texans were eliminated from the playoffs late
Sunday night with the New York Jets' win over Cincinnati.
It was the first time Schaub had started every game since
arriving in Houston after missing five games in each of his
first two seasons with injuries. Though the decision on Schaub's
contract didn't have to be made until March, McNair said they
decided to give it to him the first time it was discussed.
"It was a no-brainer, there's no way that we're not going to
keep Matt," McNair said. "He's our quarterback and the team
has confidence in him. He's shown great courage and you've
seen when he's gotten injured, he's gone back out there and
led his team. So he's really won the respect of his teammates
and that's what you need." Schaub was 24 of 39 for 303 yards
and two touchdowns against the Patriots for his ninth 300-yard
passing game of the season, tied for second most in league
history.

Redskins fire coach Jim Zorn after 4-12 season

Jim Zorn was fired by the Washington Redskins early Monday,
the first step in yet another team overhaul under owner Dan
Snyder. Zorn was informed of his dismissal shortly after the
team returned to Redskins Park following Sunday's season-ending
23-20 loss at San Diego. Zorn went 12-20 over two seasons, but
he lost 18 of his last 24 games after a 6-2 start in 2008. The
Redskins struggled early despite a weak schedule this season
and finished 4-12, their worst record since 1994. "The status
quo is not acceptable," general manager Bruce Allen said in a
statement released by the team. "I felt it was necessary to
not waste a moment of time to begin building this team into
a winner." Zorn's replacement will be Washington's seventh
coach since Snyder bought the team in 1999. Playing a role
in the decision will be Allen, who was hired as the GM last
month. Zorn's dismissal had been expected for months. The front
office stripped him of his play-calling duties in late October,
and Snyder has interviewed assistant coach Jerry Gray for the
job weeks ago, according to the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which
monitors minority hiring in the NFL. Former Denver Broncos
coach Mike Shanahan is considered the favorite to replace
Zorn. The new coach, Snyder and Allen will have a monumental
task to rebuild a team with many roster deficiencies and major
questions at offensive line, quarterback and running back.
This year's team has been hurt by numerous injuries, a lack
of depth and many off-the-field distractions, but also by an
inability of Zorn's West Coast offense to consistently find
the end zone. The Redskins failed to score more than 17
points in their first eight games, prompting the front office
to bring longtime NFL assistant coach Sherm Lewis out of
retirement as an offensive consultant and play-caller.
Zorn, who had never previously been a head coach or coordinator
in the NFL, wasn't even on Snyder's list of candidates when
Joe Gibbs retired at the end of the 2007 season. Zorn become
a last-minute option when other contenders either showed no
interest, dropped out or were deemed unsatisfactory. Snyder
initially hired Zorn to be the offensive coordinator, then
promoted him to head coach two weeks later after an extensive
interview.
