Arizona OT Gandy has sports hernia surgery
Arizona Cardinals left tackle Mike Gandy has undergone surgery
to repair a sports hernia. Coach Ken Whisenhunt says the
operation was performed Friday in Philadelphia and the
recovery time is expected to be three to six weeks. Whisenhunt
says no decision has been made on whether to keep Gandy on the
active roster or place him on season-ending injury reserve.
Gandy has been bothered by the injury for several weeks. He
missed the Dec. 6 game against Minnesota but came back for the
Monday night game against San Francisco. However, Gandy left
the game in the third quarter. He has been replaced by Jeremy
Bridges. Gandy had started 31 consecutive games for the
Cardinals before missing the Vikings contest.
Titans QB Young playing vs. Dolphins despite hamstring strain
Quarterback Vince Young is active for the Tennessee Titans
and set to start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins despite
his mildly strained right hamstring. Young pulled his
hamstring during the second quarter of last week's victory
over the St. Louis Rams. He practiced Friday and had been
listed as questionable. He is 6-1 as a starter since returning
to the lineup this season. Kenny Britt will start a sixth
consecutive game at wide receiver, although Justin Gage is
active after coming back from broken bones in his lower back.
Center Jake Grove and right guard Donald Thomas are active for
Miami. However, the Dolphins will start Joe Berger at center,
with Nate Garner at right guard.

Browns awaiting Holmgren decision
Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown thinks embattled Cleveland
coach Eric Mangini deserves another year. Mangini improved to
3-11 in his first season in Cleveland with a win at Kansas
City on Sunday, but he could be fired if Mike Holmgren accepts
an offer to head the Browns' football operations. Holmgren did
not rule out a return to the sideline when he said Friday that
Cleveland's offer would include "any and all" of the titles of
president, general manager and coach. Following Sunday's win,
Brown, an executive advisor for team owner Randy Lerner, said
Mangini should be back in 2010. Brown believes the team is
improving with "a lot of young people who we don't know who
are playing good football." Brown also said he didn't want to
contradict his boss. Holmgren said on a radio show on Friday
that he would give Lerner an answer "sooner than later." A
possible move to Cleveland became more plausible on Saturday
when Holmgren turned down a front-office position with the
Seattle Seahawks, the team he coached for 10 seasons and took
to its only Super Bowl appearance. Holmgren guided the
Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowls, winning one. The Browns
had no immediate update on Monday about Holmgren. Mangini is
scheduled to have a 2:30 p.m. news conference. Cleveland has
won consecutive games for the first time since last season,
adding another wrinkle to Mangini's uncertain future. The
coach could use the Browns' late-season surge as proof to
Holmgren - or whoever is Cleveland's next top executive -
that he should be given more time. However, if Holmgren
wants to coach again, then Mangini would be fired for the
second straight year. He was dismissed by the New York Jets
after last season.

Holmgren declines offer to rejoin Seahawks in senior position
The Seattle Seahawks said Saturday that Mike Holmgren will
not rejoin the team. The Seahawks talked with Holmgren over
the weekend about a senior leadership position."After a series
of respectful discussions, Mike has declined our offer to rejoin
the team given the structure we proposed," Seahawks CEO
Tod Leiweke said in a statement. "We hold Mike in high regard
and wish the Holmgren family the very best with their new
horizons." Holmgren, 61, won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay
Packers and led the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance
as a head coach. "I sincerely thank Paul Allen and Tod for all
their support over the years," Holmgren said in a statement.
"I thank them for reaching out to me, and we conclude these
discussions as friends." Holmgren also has been interested
in joining the Cleveland Browns. He spent two days meeting
with Browns owner Randy Lerner earlier this week. Holmgren
said on his radio show in Seattle on Friday that he planned
to give Lerner an answer "sooner than later" but added there
was no definite timetable. It might have accelerated after
he declined an offer to rejoin the Seahawks. "It's a
wonderful opportunity for anybody," Holmgren said of his
visit to Cleveland. "It's about as good a job situation as
you could ask for in this business."

Saints' Bush hurts right leg, doesn't return against Cowboys
Saints running back Reggie Bush appeared to injure his right
leg during Saturday's 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Bush limped off the field and went straight to the bench
immediately after making a 16-yard reception during the
second quarter. The injury occurred shortly after the catch,
but Bush was able to limp out of bounds before being tackled.
Trainers surrounded Bush for a few minutes, then he got up
and began stretching both legs on his own. There was no
immediate word from the Saints on the extent of the injury
or whether Bush would be able to return. However, Lance Moore
replaced Bush as punt returner after the Cowboys' next possession
late in the first half.
