Panthers, Browns, Falcons and More...

Friday, December 18, 2009

Simmons placed on IR

Buffalo Bills right guard Kendall Simmons was placed on
injured reserve Friday because of a shoulder injury.
The eight-year NFL veteran had started the past three
games after signing in late November to help an offensive
line devastated by injuries. He becomes the Bills' fifth
offensive lineman put on season-ending IR. Richie Incognito,
acquired off waivers on Wednesday, will likely get the start
at right guard Sunday against New England. Tight end Joe
Klopfenstein was signed to replace Simmons on the 53-man
roster. Receiver Terrell Owens (illness) is questionable
for the Patriots game after missing his second straight
practice Friday. Left tackle Jonathan Scott (eye) is also
questionable.

Matt Moore again to start at QB for Panthers

Matt Moore will make his third consecutive start at quarterback
for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
Jake Delhomme was ruled out of the game Friday with a broken
finger that's kept him sidelined since Nov. 29. Moore is 1-1
as a starter, but the Panthers have scored just two touchdowns
in that stretch. Cornerback Richard Marshall is questionable
with a right ankle injury, but practiced Friday. Backup running
back and kick returner Tyrell Sutton is also questionable with
a sore hamstring. Defensive end Tyler Brayton is probable
after missing last Sunday's loss to New England with a
concussion. Linebacker Na'il Diggs (ribs), receiver Muhsin
Muhammad (knee) and running back Jonathan Stewart (toe) are
also probable.

Man gets 2 1/2 years in sale of gun that shot McNair

A convicted murderer who pleaded guilty to selling the gun
used to kill ex-NFL quarterback Steve McNair has been sentenced
to 2 1/2 years in prison. Thirty-three-year-old Adrian Gilliam,
of nearby La Vergne, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court
in Nashville to 30 months. Gilliam acknowledged during a court
hearing in September that he sold a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic
pistol to McNair's mistress for $100. Nashville police said
the woman, 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi, used the weapon to kill
McNair and herself on July 4. Gilliam was arrested about
two weeks later and initially pleaded not guilty.

Browns waiting on Holmgren

The Cleveland Browns could get word from Mike Holmgren on
the radio. The Super Bowl-winning coach is scheduled to appear
on Seattle's KJR on Friday, when he may announce his future
plans. Holmgren spent two days meeting with Cleveland owner
Randy Lerner. Lerner is seeking a "serious, credible leader"
to take over his struggling franchise's front office and
Holmgren is his No. 1 choice. The 61-year-old Holmgren left
Cleveland without accepting a deal, fueling speculation that
he may want to weigh other options. One of them could be
returning to the Seahawks, who have yet to begin their
formal search for a general manager. On Thursday, the Browns
said they have not discussed salary with Holmgren, who made
$7 million last season as Seattle's coach.

Retired Falcons RB Dunn purchasing minority stake in team

Former Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn is buying
a piece of the team. The Falcons announced Thursday that
Dunn, who retired after the 2008 season, has an agreement to
become the team's seventh limited partner. The purchase was
unanimously approved by NFL owners on Wednesday and is expected
to be completed by March 1. Dunn spent 12 years in the NFL
with the Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He started his
career with the Bucs, played with the Falcons for six seasons,
then returned to Tampa Bay for his final year. He was just the
seventh player to reach 10,000 yards rushing and 4,000 yards
receiving. "During his tenure with the Falcons and throughout
his NFL career, Warrick represented the highest of NFL standards
on and off the field," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a
statement released by the team. "Warrick has a special affinity
for the Falcons, as we do for him, and we are very happy he will
be back in the Falcons family."
Terms of the agreement weren't disclosed, but Blank will continue
to hold more than a 90 percent stake in the team after Dunn
becomes a minority owner. "This opportunity fulfills one of
my professional goals to expand my knowledge and experience
in the area of NFL team management, branding and operations,"
Dunn said in a statement. "I am excited to be back as part of
the Falcons team and, in particular, to work with Mr. Blank."
Dunn already is well known for his work off the field,
including the Homes for the Holidays program that assists
single parents in becoming home owners for the first time.
He received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award in
2004.

Chiefs blacked out for first time since 1990; Chargers sell out

A Kansas City Chiefs home game will be blacked out on local
television for the first time since 1990 after the team failed
to sell enough tickets for Sunday's game against the Cleveland
Browns. Last weekend's home game against the Buffalo Bills
came close to being blacked out before the Chiefs received a
24-hour extension and sold the required number of tickets.
The Chiefs (3-10) had sold out 156 consecutive games. The
meeting with the Browns (2-11) is the Chiefs' final home
game of the season. The San Diego Chargers avoided a blackout
for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. It will be
the 46th consecutive regular-season and postseason Chargers
game to be televised live in Southern California, the longest
streak in team history. However, the St. Louis Rams failed
to sell out their second consecutive home game, with about
8,000 tickets remaining for Sunday's meeting with the Houston
Texans. The Rams didn't ask the NFL for a 24-hour extension
to sell tickets and avoid the blackout, executive vice
president of football operations Kevin Demoff said Thursday.
The Rams also failed to sell out a Nov. 29 game against the
Seattle Seahawks and will have trouble avoiding a blackout
for the Jan. 3 season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Rams are 0-6 at home and 1-12 overall this season.
The Detroit Lions' home game against the Arizona Cardinals
also won't be shown on local TV. The Lions have sold out
three of their six games at Ford Field this season.
