Panthers LT Gross has surgery on broken ankle

Carolina Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross is recovering
after undergoing surgery on his broken right ankle Sunday
night. A team official said the surgery went well. The
Panthers are expected to place him on injured reserve later
Monday. The anchor of Carolina's offensive line and the
team's best pass protector was injured when an Atlanta
player rolled into his leg late in the second quarter of
the Panthers' 28-19 win Sunday. The Panthers moved Travelle
Wharton to left tackle and inserted inexperienced Mackenzy
Bernadeau in Wharton's old spot at left guard. The Panthers
could sign another offensive lineman to add depth before
Thursday's game against Miami. Gross has only missed one
start in his career.

Cowboys lineman Colombo breaks left leg

Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo broke his left
leg on Dallas' second drive of the first quarter in a 17-7
loss Sunday to Green Bay Packers. Head coach Wade Phillips
said Colombo is expected to have surgery on Monday.
Colombo was injured on the first play of the drive blocking
for running back Marion Barber when Packers defensive tackle
Johnny Jolly rolled up on the back of Colombo's leg. He was
immediately taken for X-rays and the team announced early
in the second quarter he had a broken left fibula. Head
coach Wade Phillips said afterward that Colombo had a high
ankle sprain and broken fibula. "He's not necessarily out
for the season. That remains to be seen," Phillips said.
Colombo, a former first-round pick by the Bears in 2002,
has been a stalwart on the Cowboys' offensive line, starting
every game since 2006 - a string of 57 in a row. "He's been
a staple over there for a while now, and that's going to be
very tough," Tony Romo said. "He's been playing there for a
long time, he's been playing at a high level. We're going to
have to all take it upon ourselves to step up and play a
little bit better."

Dolphins' Brown hurts right ankle

-Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was on crutches
following his team's victory Sunday against Tampa Bay, and
it's unclear how long he'll have them. Brown hurt his right
ankle in the third quarter, limped off the field assisted by
teammates and later hobbled to the locker room, where he
watched the end of Miami's 25-23 win. "We took X-rays. We'll
wait to see what happens," Brown said. "I don't think it's too
bad." Brown was hurt on a running play that ended with his
lost fumble. "I kind of rolled my foot to the inside," he said.
"It's tough coming out of the game. Fortunately we were able to
get a W. I just don't like being on the sidelines." Brown is
the Dolphins' leading rusher this season and the triggerman
on most of their wildcat plays. His absence meant a busier
load for Ricky Williams, who ran for a season-high 102 yards.
Brown ran for 82 yards and a touchdown. "He's our guy," teammate
Jason Ferguson said. "Luckily we've got another guy who can
pick it up. That's Ricky. He did a great job."

Court won't hear complaint about Redskins name

The Supreme Court won't hear an appeal from a group of Native
Americans who think the name of the NFL's Washington Redskins
football team is offensive. The high court on Monday turned
away an appeal from Suzan Shown Harjo. That ends the latest
round in the 17-year court battle between the Redskins and a
group of American Indians who want them to change their name.
Harjo and her fellow plaintiffs have been working since 1992
to have the Redskins trademarks declared invalid. They
initially won - the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office panel
canceled the trademarks in 1999. But U.S. District Judge
Colleen Kollar-Kotelly overturned the ruling in 2003 in part
because the suit was filed decades after the first Redskins
trademark was issued in 1967. The U.S. Court of Appeals then
sent the case back to Kollar-Kotelly, noting that the youngest
of the plaintiffs was only 1 year old in 1967 and therefore
could not have taken legal action at the time. But Kollar-Kotelly
rejected that argument, saying the youngest plaintiff turned 18
in 1984 and therefore "waited almost eight years" after coming
of age to join the lawsuit. The Court of Appeals upheld that
decision in May, and the Supreme Court now has refused to
review that decision. This doesn't end the legal battle,
however. The plaintiffs have a backup plan: A group of six
American Indians ranging in age from 18 to 24 filed essentially
the same claim two years ago, but the new case has been on
hold until this one was resolved. None of the judges has
commented on whether the Redskins name is offensive or racist,
instead holding in favor of the football team on legal
technicalities.
