Carolina QB Delhomme injured against Cardinals

Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme was checked out at a
local hospital after injuring his chest against the Arizona
Cardinals. Delhomme went down on a big hit from the Cardinals'
Chike Okeafor and Darnell Dockett with 5:59 left in the third
quarter. He came back to play the next series but was replaced
by Matt Moore in the fourth quarter. Delhomme said after
returning from the hospital that the injury was a chest
contusion and that no serious problem was detected.

Favre hears boos everywhere he turns at Lambeau

This sure wasn't the reception Brett Favre used to get at
Lambeau Field. Favre was booed loudly when he and the Minnesota
Vikings took the field for their first offensive series Sunday,
and there were more whistles and jeers anytime the former
Green Bay Packers icon got near the ball. This is Favre's
first trip back to Green Bay since signing with the Vikings,
the Packers' loathsome rival. Favre showed flashes of the
gunslinger who delighted Packers fans for 16 years, hitting
Chester Taylor for a 20-yard gain on third-and-5. But the
Vikings were forced to punt when Favre couldn't connect
with Bernard Berrien on third-and-9 from his own 45 and it
was the Green Bay defense that was cheered as he left the
field.

Jamal Lewis plans to retire after season

Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis plans to retire at
the end of the season. Lewis told reporters after the Browns'
30-6 loss Sunday at Chicago that his 10th season will be his
final one, adding, "When I talk, I mean what I say and I think
you all know that." Lewis, who missed two games in late
September and early October with a hamstring injury, ran
for 69 yards on 16 carries against the Bears. That gave him
349 this year and 10,456 in his career, helping Baltimore win
the Super Bowl as a rookie during his seven seasons with the
Ravens. He served prison time while with them in 2005 for using
a cell phone to set up a drug buy five years earlier, and
besides the off-the-field issues, there were questions about
his durability and speed when he signed with Cleveland before
the 2007 season. Lewis answered those by running for 1,304
yards that year, his best since leading the NFL with 2,066
in '03. He followed that by going for 1,002 last season, the
seventh time he reached the 1,000-yard mark, and with the
lowly Browns at 1-7, his career appears to be coming to an
end. "It is very hard," he said. "Very. I think this is my
last year. I think this is it. Honestly, the way it looks,
you know, I had a good run." Lewis acknowledged that finishing
with the Browns stuck in a miserable season is not the easiest
way to go out. "But at the same time, I stuck my neck out
and wanted to come in and help and do what I could do, even
though I knew the consequences," he said. "I knew what we
had and what was going to go with it, being that you do have
new people coming in, new coaches, new staff, and all that -
there's a lot that comes with that."

Lucas hurts shoulder against Cowboys

-Seattle cornerback Ken Lucas did not return after he sustained
a shoulder stinger in the third quarter of the Seahawks' game
Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Lucas was hurt trying to
bring down running back Felix Jones in Dallas' 38-17 victory.
On the tackle, Jones pushed Lucas to the ground, and the ninth-
year cornerback landed awkwardly. Two trainers helped Lucas
slowly walk back to the bench. Seahawks coach Jim Mora Jr.
did not have an update on Lucas after the game. Seattle's
defense took a hit earlier in the week when three-time Pro
Bowl middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu was put on injured reserve
after surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle. Seattle
cornerback Marcus Trufant was active for the first time Sunday,
two days after being activated from the physically unable to
perform list. "If we can get through a week without any injuries,
that gives us a chance to start building consistency." Mora said.

Agent: Chiefs, Johnson, reach agreement

Larry Johnson's agent said he and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed
Saturday night to cut the running back's two-week suspension in
half, saving him more than $300,000. Peter Schaffer told The
Associated Press that nothing had been signed. "We've been
working hard at it since Thursday," Schaffer said. "We think
we have a positive resolution and we'll be able to move forward
in the right direction." The Chiefs suspended Johnson for two
weeks until Nov. 9 for what they called conduct detrimental
to the club. It would include only one game, Nov. 8 at
Jacksonville, because this is their bye week. On his Twitter
account last Sunday night and then again the next day speaking
to reporters, Johnson used gay slurs. It triggered quick
reaction from gay rights groups demanding that he be punished.
In another tweet, he also questioned Chiefs coach Todd Haley's
competence. The two-week absence would cost him about $630,000.
He might still face punishment from the league. The Chiefs have
consistently said they would have no comment on the situation
and a spokesman told AP Saturday night the club had nothing to
say. Johnson, who turns 30 this month, needs only 75 yards to
become the Chiefs' career leader. When the suspension was
announced Wednesday, Schaffer said he intended to appeal.
But he said Saturday night that Johnson had resisted.
"He kept saying, `You go to a grievance hearing, they can
get adversarial and I don't want to be that way,"' Schaffer
related. "He said, `I plan on being a Chief the next Monday,
so why would I want to fight with somebody when the next day
I will be fighting for them?' "I thought that was a very
mature stance."
