Good Morning,

The second article is an interesting example of how
particular technologies can redefine a nation's capability.
In this case, as most such cases, weapons technology has
given a certain clout to Iranian troops.

Until Next Time,
Erin

Study: Flow from dams can disrupt wildlife

DAVIS, Calif. - River-flow fluctuations downstream of dams
different from natural flow patterns can have significant
negative effects on aquatic species, U.S. researchers say.
Scientists from the U.S. Forest Service's Pacific Southwest
Research Station, the University of California-Davis and the University of California-Berkeley analyzed how altered water flows caused by hydroelectric dams impact the lifecycle of the foothill yellow-legged frog, which lives in foothill regions from Southern California to southern Oregon, a USFS release said Monday. The species completes its complete lifecycle in a river environment, the researchers said. The species has adapted to predictable flow patterns that are high during the spring runoff period and low during the summer, but changes to these patterns affect the survival of eggs and tadpoles and could limit populations of this declining species, they said. Tadpoles of the species are not strong swimmers and often do not survive the high flow events that can occur during the summer months in many dammed rivers. "To conserve riverine species, one solution may be to restore some of the key characteristics of natural flow patterns, especially the timing of high and low flow periods," Amy Lind, wildlife biologist at the Pacific Southwest Research Station, said. While managing water discharge from hydroelectric dams to mirror the environment's natural flow is ideal, this approach may not meet the needs of human consumption and energy demands, some researchers admit.

Iran's Guards get new missile system

TEHRAN - Iran has begun supplying its troops with the Qiyam
ballistic missile system, which defense officials said is
harder to detect than the older models. "The new surface to
surface missiles, Qiyam I (Resurrection) were successfully
detected and delivered to the armed forces today," a statement issued to Iran's al-Alam television said. Delivery of the missile system to Iran's Revolutionary Guards has already begun, the semi-official Fars news agency said. The mass production of the missile system proves Iran is becoming self-sufficient in its missile production capability, the agency said. "Mass-production of Qiam missile shows the country's self-sufficiency in manufacturing all missiles and humiliated those who claimed Iran is cooperating with other countries on the issue," the Iranian Student News Agency quoted Defense Minister Ahmed Vahidi saying Sunday. "These new missiles enjoy supersonic speed and cannot be tracked or intercepted by the enemy," Mohammed Ali Jafari, commander of the Revolutionary Guards, told reporters earlier this year, Fars said.

U.S. astronauts fix station in spacewalk

HOUSTON - Two U.S. astronauts finished an 8-hour operation
outside the International Space Station Sunday, the sixth-
longest spacewalk ever, NASA said. Drew Feustel and Mike
Fincke completed the 8-hour, 7-minute walk at 9:12 a.m.
Houston time, the agency said. Their tasks, all completed,
included refilling a cooling loop with ammonia and lubricating a joint on a solar power device that tracks the sun. The astronauts also installed a camera cover on Dextre (the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator), one of the station's robotic arms, and lubricated one of the robot's hands. Also Sunday, Russian cosmonaut Dmitry Kondratyev handed over command of the International Space Station to Andrey Borisenko. Italian Paolo Nespoli and American Cady Coleman are to return to Earth Monday.
