Greetings Bible Enthusiast!

What did Jesus mean when He said, "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out"? It is quite clear that He did not mean it literally as there is no evidence in the Bible that any of the disciples did any amputating in order to gain victory over sin.

The whole passage in Matthew is talking about things that cause people to stumble, either themselves or others. It is different things for different people; one person's "eye" may cause them to stumble, like pornography or lust, another's "hand" may cause them to sin, like thievery or violence.

We all have some kind of weakness in the flesh over which we must gain victory by not having anything to do with those things; if effect, by "cutting them off!" Jesus is giving us a principle by which to live, to keep us on the straight and narrow path!

God Bless You!

--TODAY'S NOT SO TRIVIAL TRIVIA QUESTION:

Q. What evidence does the Bible give that Paul's "thorn in the flesh" involved his eyesight?

Answer below.

------------------------------------------------------------

--DAILY BIBLE VERSE:

If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

And if your right hand causes you to sin cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:29-30,
(also Matthew 18:8-9, which states, "If your hand or foot causes you to sin...")

--TODAY'S BIT OF WISDOM/REFLECTION:

"Sin and the child of God are incompatible. They may occasionally meet; they cannot live together in harmony."

- John R. W. Scott

--ANSWER TO TRIVIA QUESTION:

Q. What evidence does the Bible give that Paul's "thorn in the flesh" involved his eyesight?

A. Galatians 4:15 & 6:11

"For I bear you witness that if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me."

"See with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand!"

Also, remember that when Paul met Jesus on the way to Damascus, he was struck blind for three days. When his vision was restored it says that something like scales fell from his eyes; perhaps his vision was not fully restored to keep him, as he said, humble. (Acts 9:18)
