Oral Treatments Possible for MS

Oral treatment of multiple sclerosis could soon be a reality
as two experimental pills pass clinical trials. Today, MS
is treated with injections and infusions but this discovery
could change the all of that significantly. During the
trials, some people taking the drugs experienced adverse
symptoms including herpes infections and an eye disease that
has the potential to induce blindness. The FDA is among the
regulators who will weigh the benefits to these symptoms and
decide if the pills will hit the market.

Reducing Salt Could Save Thousands of Lives

BOSTON - Shaving 3 grams off the daily salt intake of Ameri-
cans could prevent up to 66,000 strokes, 99,000 heart attacks
and 92,000 deaths in the United States, while saving $24
billion in health costs per year. The benefit to the U.S.
population would be comparable to cutting smoking by 50 per-
cent, significantly lowering obesity rates and giving chol-
esterol drugs to virtually everyone to prevent heart attacks,
said Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo of the University of Cali-
fornia, San Francisco and colleagues. Such a goal, they
said, is readily attainable. Salt, which contributes to high
blood pressure and heart disease, is widely overused in the
United States, with 75 to 80 percent coming from processed
food. Men typically consume 10.4 grams per day. For women,
the average is 7.3 grams. Its use is rising. A reduction of
1 gram would prevent 11,000 to 23,000 strokes, 18,000 to
35,000 heart attacks and 15,000 to 32,000 deaths from any
cause, the researchers reported in New England Journal of
Medicine.

Reports Say Flu Has Not Claimed Any New Lives

For the first time in months, Minnesota has recorded no new
flu-related deaths, the Minnesota Department of Health
announced Wednesday in its weekly update of flu statistics.
There were also no reported outbreaks of flu-like illness at
schools or nursing homes during the second week of January,
another sign the H1N1 outbreak continues to fade. In a re-
lated development, health officials say there's no sign that
seasonal flu has arrived yet -- and it may not at all. In
ordinary years, the first seasonal flu cases typically show
up in December and start mounting in January, said Richard
Danila, deputy state epidemiologist. But so far, "there's
been virtually zero" confirmed cases of seasonal influenza,
he said. "It's really surprising." Danila said he's never
seen seasonal flu wait this long to make an appearance,
adding: "But no one's willing to say that it won't come."
Flu experts speculate the H1N1 virus may end up wiping out
other strains of flu, in classic Darwinian fashion. "Seasonal
flu didn't find a niche and still hasn't found a niche yet
of susceptible people," Danila said.

A New Look into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have made it
possible to diagnose post-traumatic stress disorder by
reading patterns of magnetic fields created by brain cells.
The discovery shows potential to diagnose and treat PTSD,
which is triggered by trauma and characterized by symptoms
such as flashbacks and uncontrollable rage. The procedure is
called the "synchronous neural interactions" test, which
generates data through magnetoencephalography or (MEG). The
same test was also used to diagnose other ailments such as
chronic pain and Alzheimer?s.
