What's Up...

In case you didn't know, this weekend is noneother than Lollapalooza weekend - which is celebrating its twentieth Anniversary this year. Perry Ferrel's gift to music (besides Jane's Addiction of course) began in 1991 as the one big festival dedicated to alternative music. Grunge, punk, rap, indie, and world music have all been celebrated year after year at Lollapalooza. Big names like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and the Foo Fighters have headlined some of their best concerts to date at Lolla - but you don't always hear about the little guys.

The three-day festival has featured hundreds of lesser known bands that typically get even more famous. I hate to say it, but Lady Gaga did play one mid-afternoon at Lollapalooza before she was a big deal.

Well today is Saturday, and that means that Eminiem, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket are the big show stoppers tonight. But I was surprised to see a personal favorite make it up to the big-league timeslot - the band's name is Beirut, and I hate to admit I'm only familiar with one song, called "Mount Wroclai." It's an old-world gypsy sounding song with what I believe to be an accordion, but it's served in an indie-fresh way (if that makes sense). I love it, and think ya might too.
