Good Morning,

Scientists have made a major breakthrough in underwater
transportation; a robotic vehicle that derives all of its
energy from the ocean. Read all about how this is possible
and more details in the last article.

Until Next Time,
Erin

Scientists create self-powered nanosensor

ATLANTA - U.S. scientists say they've combined a new gener-
ation of piezoelectric nanogenerators with nanowire sensors
to create a self-powered sensing device. Georgia Institute
of Technology researchers say their self-powered nanometer-
scale sensing device is believed to be the world's first
that draws power from the conversion of mechanical energy.
The scientists led by Professor Zhong Lin Wang said the new
device can measure the pH of liquids or detect the presence
of ultraviolet light using electrical current produced from
mechanical energy in the environment. Based on arrays con-
taining as many as 20,000 zinc oxide nanowires in each nano-
generator, the device can produce up to 1.2 volts of output
voltage, and is fabricated with a chemical process designed
to facilitate low-cost manufacture on flexible substrates,
the scientists said. "We have demonstrated a robust way to
harvest energy and use it for powering nanometer-scale sen-
sors," Wang said. "We now have a technology roadmap for
scaling these nanogenerators up to make truly practical
applications." Details of the improved nanogenerator and
self-powered nanosensors appear in the journal Nature Nano-
technology.

NASA gives Phoenix lander one more chance

PASADENA, Calif. - The U.S. space agency says its Mars
Odyssey Orbiter is conducting a third campaign this week,
attempting to determine the status of the Phoenix Mars
Lander. The orbiter is listening for a signal from the
lander that would indicate it is still operating after a
martian winter it was not designed to survive. NASA scien-
tists said the orbiter has received no signals from the
solar-powered lander during two listening campaigns earlier
this year. While Odyssey listens for Phoenix during 60 over-
flights this week, the Phoenix site will be in around-the-
clock sunshine. Scientists at NASA's Pasadena, Calif., Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the project, said
although it's not designed to withstand winter conditions
the return of abundant springtime sunlight to the martian
site might revive the lander. So far, they said, said there
has been no indication the lander is still operating.

Space study focuses on human cells

HOUSTON - While space shuttle Discovery is in the first day
of its 13-day mission to the International Space Station, a
first-of-its-kind experiment is also under way. The experi-
ment, organized by Arizona State University Associate Pro-
fessor Cheryl Nickerson and her team, including Jennifer
Barrila and Shameema Sarker, is designed to provide new in-
sights into the infectious disease process, including immune
disorders and cancer. "The key to this research is the novel
way that cells adapt and respond to the unique microgravity
environment of spaceflight," Nickerson said. "In response to
microgravity, cells exhibit important biological character-
istics that are directly relevant to human health and dis-
ease, including changes in immune function, stress responses
and virulence (infectious disease potential) that are not
observed using traditional experimental approaches." In
previous experiments aboard shuttle's Atlantis and Endeavour,
the researchers determined spaceflight induces major changes
in the gene expression and virulence of a food-born pathogen.
The current mission is the first time human cells will under-
go infection by the pathogen -- Salmonella typhimurium --
during spaceflight. It will characterize the effect of micro-
gravity on intestinal cellular responses before and after
infection. The scientists say a more thorough understanding
of the way pathogens and human cells interact in space might
lead to new vaccines and therapeutics for a broad range of
diseases, as well as other afflictions affecting human popu-
lations.

Unique underwater vehicle is developed

PASADENA, Calif. - U.S. scientists say they have developed
the world's first robotic underwater vehicle that's powered
entirely by the ocean's thermal energy. The Sounding Ocean-
ographic Lagrangrian Observer Thermal RECharging submersible,
nicknamed SOLO-TREC, uses a thermal recharging engine
powered by the natural temperature differences found at
different ocean depths. "Scalable for use on most robotic
oceanographic vehicles, this technology breakthrough could
usher in a new generation of autonomous underwater vehicles
capable of virtually indefinite ocean monitoring for climate
and marine animal studies, exploration and surveillance,"
officials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,
Calif., said. Scientists from JPL, the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography and the University of California-San Diego
developed the prototype vehicle. "People have long dreamed
of a machine that produces more energy than it consumes and
runs indefinitely," said Jack Jones, a JPL engineer and SOLO-
TREC co-principal investigator. "While not a true perpetual
motion machine, since we actually consume some environmental
energy, the prototype system demonstrated by JPL and its
partners can continuously monitor the ocean without a limit
on its lifetime imposed by energy supply." Co-principal
investigator Yi Chao of JPL noted most of Earth is covered
by ocean, yet we know less about the ocean than we do about
the surface of some planets.
