Good Morning,

Today is the first ever Gizmorama with an included video
clip. I chose the clip 'Inside the Space Station' because
I found it appropriate since the International Space Station
has been mentioned many times in this newsletter. Now you get
to actually see what life is like up there!

Until Tomorrow,
Erin

Penile tissue implants deemed success

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - U.S. researchers say they have been
able to grow new penile tissue in labs and implant it into
rabbits to restore their sexual function. Dr. Anthony Atala,
director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake
Forest University Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina,
says the technique could has the potential to be used to
treat severe erectile dysfunction in men, Healthday News
reported Tuesday. "We were able to show the tissue was able
to integrate and function in the long term, which means we
can start planning clinical applications (in humans)," Atala
told Healthday. "Our hope is to be able to treat patients
with many conditions, including congenital abnormalities of
the penis, traumatic injuries, penile cancer and severe cases
of erectile dysfunction that don't benefit from drug treat-
ments." The news service said the result of the study was
published in the Nov. 9 online edition of the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences. Atala said the implanted
penile tissue reconstituted itself when implanted into rab-
bits, forming new blood vessel structures necessary for
erections while nerves from the existing tissue integrated
themselves into the new tissue.

NASA releases unique view of the Milky Way

WASHINGTON - The U.S. space agency released a never-before-
seen view of the center of the Milky Way galaxy Tuesday
(Nov. 10) in celebration of the International Year of Astro-
nomy. NASA said the composite image commemorates the 400
years since Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens
in 1609. The image was distributed to more than 150 planetar-
iums, museums, nature centers, libraries and schools across
the nation. "Each site will unveil a giant, 6-foot-by-3-foot
print of the bustling hub of our galaxy that combines a near-
infrared view from the Hubble Space Telescope, an infrared
view from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an X-ray view from
the Chandra X-ray Observatory into one multi-wavelength pic-
ture," NASA said. Officials said experts from the three
observatories assembled the final image from large mosaic
photo surveys taken by each telescope. NASA scientists said
the composite provides "one of the most detailed views ever
of our galaxy's mysterious core." The project is a collabor-
ation of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore;
the Spitzer Science Center in Pasadena, Calif.; and the
Chandra X-ray Center in Cambridge, Mass. The composite image

New idea offered to fight climate change

ATLANTA - A U.S. scientist suggests the impact of deforest-
ation and urbanization on the Earth's climate must be
addressed along with greenhouse gas emissions. Georgia Tech
Professor Brian Stone says delegates to the upcoming climate
change meeting to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, need to
give serious consideration to broadening the range of man-
agement strategies beyond only greenhouse gas reductions.
"Across the (United States) as a whole, approximately 50
percent of the warming that has occurred since 1950 is due
to land use changes (usually in the form of clearing forest
for crops or cities) rather than to the emission of green-
house gases," Stone said. "Most large U.S. cities ? are
warming at more than twice the rate of the planet as a whole
-- a rate that is mostly attributable to land use change. "As
a result, emissions reduction programs like the cap-and-trade
program under consideration by the U.S. Congress may not
sufficiently slow climate change in large cities where most
people live and where land use change is the dominant driver
of warming." Stone recommends slowing what he terms the
"green loss effect" by the planting of millions of trees in
urbanized areas and through the protection and regeneration
of global forests outside of urbanized regions. His paper
appears in the December edition of the journal Environmental
Science and Technology.

Video: Inside the Space Station

The modern internal combustion engine was invented in 1879.
Barely 130 years later mankind has built a home in the sky.
Orbiting 190 miles above the Earth's surface the space
station's residents show off life in freefall.
