Good Morning,

Scientists look to a small species of snail to possibly
strengthen military armor. The shell of this tiny creature
can absorb a considerable amount of energy without breaking.
Read all the details in the last article.

Until Next Time,

WISE spots its first near-Earth asteroid

PASADENA, Calif. - NASA says its wide-field infrared survey
explorer, called WISE, has spotted its first never-before-
seen near-Earth asteroid. Officials said the object is the
first of hundreds WISE is expected to find during its mission
to map the whole sky in infrared light. The asteroid, dis-
covered Jan. 12 and named 2010 AB78, is about 0.6 miles in
diameter and located approximately 98 million miles from
Earth. The spacecraft's discovery was confirmed with the Uni-
versity of Hawaii's 2.2-meter (88-inch) visible-light tele-
scope. "The asteroid ? circles the sun in an elliptical
orbit tilted to the plane of our solar system," NASA said.
"The object comes as close to the sun as Earth, but because
of its tilted orbit, it is not thought to pass near our
planet. This asteroid does not pose any foreseeable impact
threat to Earth, but scientists will continue to monitor it."
WISE began its all-sky survey Jan. 14 and NASA said it ex-
pects the space telescope to find about 100,000 previously
undiscovered asteroids in the main asteroid belt between Mars
and Jupiter, as well as millions of new stars and galaxies.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages
the WISE mission.

Company turning cow fat into motor oil

OVIEDO, Fla. - A Connecticut company that turns cow fat into
motor oil says it's greasing engines from Florida to Cali-
fornia, including cars in the American Le Mans. The city of
Oviedo, Fla., has become the latest customer of Green Earth
Technologies of Stamford, Conn., The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel
reported Wednesday. The company's G-OIL has no odor, is sim-
ilar in cost to regular motor oil and performs as well as
its petroleum-based competitor, said Jeff Loch, who founded
Green Earth in 2007. The American Petroleum Institute has
approved G-OIL for use in cars and it's also being used in
some soaps, cosmetics, mildew removers, lighter fluid and
pest-control products, said Loch, who calls G-OIL a biode-
gradable and renewable resource processed in the United
States. Schenectady County, N.Y., is using G-OIL in its cars
and American Le Mans has named G-Oil the official motor oil
for its racing series that promotes green technology.

Snail shell provides clues for armor

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The shell of a tiny marine snail could
be a model for better armor for soldiers and military vehi-
cles, scientists in Massachusetts said. The shell of the
scaly-foot snail can dissipate an amount of energy that would
cause weaker shells to break, scientists at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology said in a release Tuesday. The snail
lives on the floor of the Indian Ocean near hydrothermal
vents where it is exposed to temperature fluctuations and
attack from crabs, said researcher Christine Ortiz, a member
of the university's Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies.
Crab claws squeeze the snail's shell, sometimes for days,
generating mechanical energy, Ortiz wrote in the Jan. 18 Pro-
ceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The snail's
shell dissipates mechanical energy through a surface shell
of embedded iron sulfide granules, a thick organic middle
layer and a calcified inner layer. The middle layer absorbs
much of the energy during attack and may also dissipate heat
-- important considerations when designing military armor,
Ortiz said.
