Good Morning,
Researchers in Australia have discovered the gene responsible
for curly hair. This could mean advancements in both cos-
metics and forensic identification of criminals. Check out
the last article for more details on the research.
Until Next Time,

Old book smell indicates its condition
LONDON - British scientists say they've discovered the musty
odor produced by old books can be used to assess the book's
condition and help preserve it. Researchers from University
College London, led by Matija Strlic, say they've developed
a test that can measure the degradation of old books and his-
torical documents based on their smell. The non-destructive
"sniff" test could help libraries and museums preserve a
range of prized paper-based objects, some of which are de-
grading rapidly due to advancing age, the scientists said.
Strlic said the musty smell of an old book is the result of
hundreds of so-called volatile organic compounds released
into the air from the paper. The substances, the scientists
said, hold clues to the paper's condition. The new technique,
called "material degradomics," analyzes the gases emitted by
old books and documents without altering the documents them-
selves, unlike conventional testing. The research is detailed
in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

Low emissions diesel truck engine created
MUNICH, Germany - German scientists say they have developed
a diesel truck engine that emits barely measurable emissions.
Researchers at the Technical University Muenchen, led by
Professor Georg Wachtmeister, say they've also developed a
probe that allows them to take samples directly from the
combustion chamber while the engine is running. That, they
hope, will allow them to determine precisely how soot forms,
with the aim of developing new methods for emissions control.
The researchers said their goal is to design and fine-tune
their engine so it complies with new European Union emission
limits without resorting to a catalytic converter.
Israeli scientists create new nanomaterial
TEL AVIV, Israel - Israeli scientists say they've created a
nanomaterial that may revolutionize solar panels, batteries
and even be used as the basis for self-cleaning windows.
Tel Aviv University Professor Ehud Gazit, graduate student
Lihi Adler-Abramovich and colleagues said they have developed
a method to control the atoms and molecules of peptides so
that they "grow" to resemble small forests of grass. The
"peptide forests" repel dust and water. "This is beautiful
and protean research," Adler-Abramovich said. "It began as
an attempt to find a new cure for Alzheimer's disease. To
our surprise, it also had implications for electric cars,
solar energy and construction." Using a variety of peptides,
which are inexpensive to produce, the researchers said they
created "self-assembled nanotubules" in a vacuum under high
temperatures. The nanotubules can withstand extreme heat and
are resistant to water. "We are not manufacturing the actual
material, but developing a basic-science technology that
could lead to self-cleaning windows and more efficient energy
storage devices in just a few years," Adler-Abramovich said.
Lab officials said they have been approached to develop the
coating technology commercially. Gazit said he has a contract
with pharmaceutical company Merck to research short peptides
for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The research is
reported in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Scientists discover curly hair gene
BRISBANE, Australia - Researchers at Australia's Queensland
Institute of Medical Research said they have discovered the
gene responsible for dictating the curliness of hair. Re-
searcher Professor Nick Martin said his team discovered
variations in the trichohyalin gene, which was previously
known to have a role in the development of hair follicles,
are responsible for the curliness or straightness of hair,
the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported Tuesday. Martin said the
discovery could have major implications for hair treatments.
"Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair
curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair direc-
tly," he said. "I will be discussing this with a major cos-
metic company in Paris in January." He said the find could
also have applications in forensic science. "We might be
able to refine identikit pictures, using DNA to say whether
the suspect had straight or curly hair," Martin said.
