Good Morning,

In the wake of fear caused by the oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico, U.S. engineers find a light of hope. The team from
Purdue has created a means to separate oil from water. Read
all the details in the first article.

Until Next Time,

Purdue technology may aid in oil spills

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - U.S. engineers say they've developed
a membrane that can separate oil from water and which might
be used to clean up oil spills. Purdue University Assistant
Professor Jeffrey Youngblood said the technology his team
has created might eventually be used to help with environ-
mental cleanups, such as the current oil spill in the Gulf
of Mexico. He said the technology might be beneficial in a
variety of other applications, including water purification
and industrial uses. The scientists said their new tech-
nology lasts longer than conventional filters for separating
oil from water. They said it works by attracting water while
beading oil -- traits that are usually mutually exclusive.
Youngblood said oil dispersed in water and then run through
the filters results in a 98 percent separation. The tech-
nology is being licensed through the Purdue Research
Foundation's Office of Technology Commercialization.

Some black holes make stronger jets of gas

PASADENA, Calif. - U.S. scientists say they've determined
supermassive black holes that spin backwards might produce
more ferocious jets of gas than other black holes. The
researchers, led by astrophysicist David Garofalo at NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said their finding has broad
implications for how galaxies change over time. "A lot of
what happens in an entire galaxy depends on what's going
on in the minuscule central region where the black hole
lies," Garofalo said, explaining black holes can spin in
the same direction as their disks, called prograde black
holes, or against the flow , called retrograde black holes.
For decades, astronomers thought that the faster the spin
of the black hole, the more powerful the jet. But there
were problems with that "spin paradigm" model. For example,
some prograde black holes had been found with no jets.
"Garofalo and his colleagues have been busy flipping the
model on its head," said NASA. "In previous papers, they
proposed that the backward, or retrograde, black holes spew
the most powerful jets while the prograde black holes have
weaker or no jets." The new study links the researchers'
theory with observations of galaxies across time, or at
varying distances from Earth. The research that included
Daniel Evans of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and Rita Sambruna of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
appears in the May online issue of the Monthly Notices of
the Royal Astronomical Society.

Stem cells made into tumor killers

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Japanese scientists say they have created
a way to produce natural killer T cells, known for suppres-
sing tumor growth, by using pluripotent stem cells. Devel-
oped by researchers at the Riken Research Center for Allergy
and Immunology, the technique is said to open the door for
effective new cell-targeted cancer treatments. Although T
cells play an essential role in innate immune responses by
protecting against tumors and virus-infected cells, the
researchers said most cancer patients have very few T
cells, which has prevented the wider application of the
therapy. But the Riken scientists said induced pluripotent
stem cells capable of differentiating into any type of cell
present a potential solution to the problem. The research
is reported in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical
Investigation.

Study: Arctic ice at record low point

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A U.S.-led group of international scien-
tists says it has determined less ice now covers the arctic
region than at any time in recent geologic history. The
team led by Ohio State University compiled what it said is
the first comprehensive history of arctic ice. For decades,
scientists have collected sediment cores from the difficult-
to-access Arctic Ocean floor, to discover what the arctic
was like in the past. The study's goal was to bring a
long-term perspective to the recent ice loss. "The ice loss
that we see today -- the ice loss that started in the early
20th century and sped up during the last 30 years -- appears
to be unmatched over at least the last few thousand years,"
said Leonid Polyak, a research scientist at the university's
Byrd Polar Research Center and a lead author of the study.
"The newest satellite techniques and field observations allow
us to see that the volume of ice is shrinking much faster
than its area today," Polyak said. "The picture is very
troubling. We are losing ice very fast." The study that
included Canadian, Danish, Swedish and British researchers
is to be published in an upcoming issue of the journal
Quarternary Science Reviews.
