New ocean wave-energy system developed

COLORADO SPRINGS - U.S. researchers say they've developed a
durable and efficient ocean wave-energy system that could be
placed at any ocean location or depth. The aerospace resear-
chers from the U.S. Air Force Academy said their system uses
lift, instead of drag, to turn a turbine's propeller blades,
with gear-driven or direct-drive generators converting the
wave energy into electric energy. They noted active controls
can pivot the blades to prevent damage to the system when
storms produce wave energy of destructive force. The re-
searchers, led by Stefan Siegel, use a cycloidal propeller
-- a design now in wide use for propellers of tugboats,
ferries and other highly maneuverable ships. They said they
can change the propeller's orientation from horizontal to
vertical, as well as developing control systems for each
propeller blade. The scientists said they are currently
using laboratory models less than 3.2 feet in diameter. A
larger version that is to be 131 feet across is to be tested
next year at a tsunami wave basin at Oregon State University.
The findings were presented last month in Minneapolis during
a meeting of the American Physical Society.

NASA fails again in attempt to free Spirit

PASADENA, Calif. - NASA is again reporting failure in the
latest of its attempts to free the stuck Mars rover Spirit
from a sand trap on the surface of the Red Planet. Scien-
tists at the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said
Spirit's right-rear wheel stalled Nov. 28 during the first
step of a two-step extrication maneuver. But officials said
the stall is different in some characteristics from a
Nov. 21 stall. NASA said the most recent event occurred more
quickly and the inferred rotor resistance was elevated at
the end of the stall. Investigation of past stall events,
along with the new characteristics, suggest the latest stall
might not be result of the terrain, but might be internal to
the right-rear wheel actuator, NASA said. "Rover project
engineers are developing a series of diagnostics to explore
the actuator health and to isolate potential terrain inter-
actions," the space agency said, noting plans for future
driving will depend on the results of the diagnostic tests.
The space agency said earlier its attempt to extract Spirit
from the martian sand trap is expected to take weeks or even
months, with uncertain probability of success. Spirit has
been stuck in loose martian sand since April 23.

Mid-infrared 100-watt-level laser created

EVANSTON, Ill. - U.S. scientists say they have achieved a
breakthrough in quantum cascade laser output power, deliv-
ering 120 watts from a single device at room temperature.
The Northwestern University researchers, led by Professor
Manijeh Razeghi, said their accomplishment is particularly
attractive for infrared countermeasures -- a way of mis-
guiding incoming missiles to protect commercial and mili-
tary aircraft. Unlike conventional interband semiconductor
lasers, the scientists said their quantum cascade laser is
an intersubband device requiring only electrons to operate.
Razeghi's team demonstrated the ridge width of a broad-area
quantum cascade laser can be increased up to 400 microns,
without suffering from filiamentation -- a phenomenon that
limits the ridge width of conventional broad-area semicon-
ductor lasers. As a result, the scientists said room temper-
ature peak output power as high as 120 watts was obtained
from a single device, which is up from 34 watts only a year
ago. The complex research appears in the journal Applied
Physics Letters.

Some birds use voices to make decisions

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - U.S. scientists say they've discov-
ered certain bird species have figured out another bird's
voice can tell them what they need to know in some situat-
ions. Purdue University Associate Professor Andrew DeWoody
said he's found the higher the pitch of a male bird's song,
the more genetic diversity that bird has. "If you have a
diverse set of genes, that can translate into physiology
and morphology diversity as well," DeWoody said. DeWoody
and former Purdue graduate student Johel Chaves-Campos
studied ocellated antbirds in the tropical forests of Cen-
tral America. The antbirds have several calls, some to
attract mates and still others that are defensive or aggres-
sive to protect turf. DeWoody's research involved recording
those calls and matching them to DNA samples of the birds.
The results, he said, suggest genetic diversity in antbirds
affects their physical abilities to produce certain sounds.
"Our results are consistent with the idea that some sound
frequencies are biomechanically difficult to produce,"
Chaves-Campos said. "Males that are genetically diverse,
and therefore expected to be in better physical condition,
are able to produce sound frequencies that males with less
genetic variation are unable to reach." The researchers
said females can pick up on the pitch of the males' songs
to decide which birds will make the best mates. The research
that included Yimen Araya-Ajoy, a graduate student from the
University of Costa Rica, appears in the early online edition
of the journal PLoS Biology.
