Good Morning,

NASA opened a new building that is considered to be their
'greenest' structure. Read about all the attributes that make
this new NASA building environmentally friendly in the first
article.

Until Tomorrow,

NASA's 'greenest' building opens

PASADENA, Calif. - The U.S. space agency opened a new build-
ing Monday at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California,
calling it NASA's most environmentally friendly structure.
The Flight Projects Center was opened following a ribbon-
cutting ceremony attended by lawmakers and local dignitaries.
"It seems fitting that the new building, where teams will
plan future space missions that use new technologies, also
has the latest 'green' technologies to help JPL do its part
to improve our environment here on Earth," said JPL Director
Charles Elachi. The building is the first NASA structure to
receive "LEED Gold Certification" under the Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design rating system established by
the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council. To qualify,
buildings must meet several criteria, such as efficient use
of water, energy and resources, and provide a healthy and
comfortable indoor workspace. The "green" features of the
new building include:

-- Outdoor lighting used for safety purposes only and
directed toward the ground to reduce light pollution in
the night sky.

-- Low-flow faucets and toilets to reduce water use by 40
percent.

-- Smart heating and cooling systems that know whether
people are in a room and then adjust temperatures and
ventilation accordingly.

Photovoltaic organic polymer advance made

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - U.S. scientists report a major ad-
vance in synthesizing photovoltaic organic polymers that
convert sunlight into electricity in non-silicon-based solar
cells. University of California-Santa Barbara Professor
Guillermo Bazan and colleagues said they've been able to
reduce reaction time by 99 percent, while more than tripling
the average molecular weight of the polymers. The scientists
said the reduced reaction time effectively cuts production
time for the organic polymers by nearly 50 percent, since
reaction time and purification time are approximately equal
in the production process, in both laboratory and commercial
environments. The higher molecular weight of the polymers
increases current density in plastic solar cells by as much
as a factor of more than four, a major benefit, the resear-
chers said. The methodology "will greatly accelerate research
in this area," Bazan said, "by making possible the rapid
production of different batches of polymers for evaluation.
"We plan to take advantage of this approach both to generate
new materials that will increase solar cell efficiencies and
operational lifetimes, and to reevaluate previously-consid-
ered polymer structures that should exhibit much higher per-
formance than they showed initially." The research appears
in the early online edition of the journal Nature Chemistry.

Math model predicts cellular actions

AUSTIN, Texas - U.S.-led scientists say they have demonstra-
ted, for the first time, a math model created from DNA data
can predict previously unknown cellular mechanisms. Univer-
sity of Texas at Austin Assistant Professor Orly Alter said
the achievement brings biologists closer to being able to
understand and control the inner workings of the cell.
"Thanks to the Human Genome Project, biology and medicine
today may be at a point similar to where physics was after
the advent of the telescope," Alter said. "The rapidly
growing number of large-scale DNA microarray data sets hold
the key to the discovery of cellular mechanisms, just as the
astronomical tables compiled by Galileo and Tycho after the
invention of the telescope enabled accurate predictions of
planetary motions and, later, the discovery of universal
gravitation." In a 2004 study, Alter used mathematical
techniques to predict a previously unknown mechanism of
regulation that correlates the beginning of DNA replication
with RNA transcription -- the first mechanism to be predicted
from mathematical modeling of microarray data. For the past
four years, Alter and her students worked with John Diffley
of the London Research Institute of Cancer Research on exper-
iments that were designed to test that prediction. The re-
sults of their research appear in the Oct. 13 online edition
of the journal Nature Molecular Systems Biology.
