Good Morning,

New satellite data from NASA shows a significant loss in
water in some major sources in California; enough water to
fill the nation's largest reservoir! Read all the details
on these observations in the last article.

Until Next Time,
Erin

Univ. of Mich. accepting stem cell embryos

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - University of Michigan researchers say
they will begin accepting donated human embryos to create
embryonic stem cell lines. Eva Feldman, a UM researcher and
neurologist, said the long-awaited move comes after state
restrictions on stem cell research were lifted last year
when Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment,
The Detroit News reported. "This is the beginning of a new
era," Feldman told the newspaper, noting that Detroit was
selected as the site for the 2010 World Stem Cell Summit
and that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has okayed
the first clinical trial of stem cells involving humans
with Lou Gehrig's disease at UM. Gary Smith, co-director
of the UM Consortium for Stem Therapies, said the university
needed time after the November 2008 vote to develop the
proper processes, which had to be approved by university
committees, before the work could begin. "We wanted to do it
right," he told the newspaper, adding that Michigan has
joined a group of other U.S. universities in creating new
stem cell lines.

New gene therapy and stem cells save limbs

BALTIMORE - U.S. scientists say they have developed an exper-
imental therapy that eliminates blood vessel blockage assoc-
iated with old age or diabetes. Johns Hopkins University
medical researchers say blood vessel blockage can lead to
low blood flow, resulting in low oxygen, that can kill cells
and tissues. Such blockages can require amputation resulting
in loss of limbs. In their new study, the scientists used
mice as a model to develop therapies that increase blood
flow, improve movement and decrease tissue death and the re-
sulting need for amputation. "In a young, healthy individual,
hypoxia -- low oxygen levels -- triggers the body to make
factors that help coordinate the growth of new blood vessels.
But this process doesn't work as well as we age," said
Dr. Gregg Semenza, a professor of pediatrics and genetic
medicine. "Now, with the help of gene therapy and stem cells
we can help reactivate the body's response to hypoxia and
save limbs." He said the study is promising because it shows
a combination of gene and cell therapy can improve the out-
come in the case of critical limb ischemia associated with
aging or diabetes. "And that's critical for bringing such
treatment to the clinic," he said. The study was detailed in
last week's early online edition of the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists ID key Ebola virus structure

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Scripps Research Institute scientists say
they've identified the structure of a key Ebola virus protein
-- a major step that might help lead to a treatment. The
Ebola virus, although rare, is one of the deadliest viruses
on Earth, killing 50 percent to 90 percent of those infected,
scientists said. There is currently no cure for Ebola hemor-
rhagic fever, no vaccine and no drug therapy. But the re-
searchers said their finding of how a key component of the
Ebola virus, called VP35, blocks the human immune system,
allowing the virus uncontrolled replication, is an important
advancement in understanding how the deadly virus works.
"After infection, the virus and immune system are in a race,"
said Associate Professor Erica Ollmann Saphire, who led the
three-year study. "If the virus can hide its molecular sig-
natures, it can suppress immune responses and replicate un-
checked. This new understanding of the mechanism that Ebola
virus uses to evade the immune system opens the door for
developing drug therapies." A signature of Ebola virus in-
fection is its double-stranded RNA, which, when detected by
immune system proteins, triggers a full immune response. The
new research describes how the VP35 protein of the Ebola
virus masks the double-stranded RNA to prevent the immune
response. The study is detailed in the early online edition
of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

NASA sees major Calif. ground water loss

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. space agency says new satellite
data shows a major loss of water from aquifers in Cali-
fornia's primary agricultural region. NASA officials said
the data reveal that since October 2003, California's
Central Valley aquifers -- and the state's major mountain
water source, the Sierra Nevadas -- have lost nearly enough
water combined to fill Lake Mead, the nation's largest res-
ervoir. University of California-Irving and NASA scientists
say the findings are based on data from the NASA-German
Aerospace Center Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment
satellites known as Grace. The twin satellites monitor tiny
month-to-month changes in the Earth's gravity field that are
primarily caused by the movement of water in land, ocean,
ice and atmosphere reservoirs. Professor Jay Famiglietti
said California's Sacramento and San Joaquin drainage bas-
ins have shed more than 7.9 trillion gallons since late 2003.
"Grace data reveal groundwater in these basins is being
pumped for irrigation at rates that are not sustainable if
current trends continue," Famiglietti said. "The findings
have major implications for the U.S. economy, as California's
Central Valley is home to one sixth of all U.S. irrigated
land, and the state leads the nation in agricultural pro-
duction and exports." The research is being presented in
San Francisco this week during a meeting of the American
Geophysical Union.
