Mucosal immune mechanism identified
YOKOHAMA, Japan - Japanese scientists say they've discovered
how specialized mucosal cells in the intestine identify, cap-
ture and destroy germs that make people sick. Researchers at
Yokohama City University and Japan's Riken Institute said
mucosal cells lining the intestines comprise the largest part
of the body's immune system. The cells secrete the antibody
Immunoglobin A when specialized microfold cells capture path-
ogens and transport them through the mucosa to lymphoid
structures in the intestines. But how the cells accomplish
that task has not been known until now, the researchers said.
In the new study, the scientists said they demonstrated, for
the first time, how a specific protein on the outer membrane
of microfold cells serves as a receptor for bacteria, cap-
turing them and then rapidly instigating immune responses.
Researchers found the protein binds to bacteria such as E.
coli and salmonella by recognizing hair-like structures on
the surface of the bacterial cell. The scientists said their
finding could lead to the development of oral vaccines,
offering easy-to-administer and cost-effective ways to com-
bat infectious diseases and allergies. The research appears
in the journal Nature.

NASA prepares for Atlantis liftoff
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The six astronauts who will be aboard
space shuttle Atlantis on its STS-129 mission began their
pre-launch activities at Cape Canaveral, Fla., Thursday. The
astronauts, who were under medical quarantine at the Johnson
Space Center in Houston this week, were to arrive Thursday
afternoon at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the
launch countdown officially beginning Friday at 1 p.m. EST.
Liftoff is scheduled for Monday at 2:28 p.m. The STS-129
mission will be commanded by Charles Hobaugh and piloted by
Barry Wilmore. The mission's astronauts are Dr. Robert
Satcher Jr., Mike Foreman, Randy Bresnik and Leland Melvin.
Wilmore, Satcher and Bresnik will be making their first trips
into space, NASA said. Officials said Atlantis will deliver
two gyroscopes and other equipment to the international
space station, with the mission to include three spacewalks
to adjust the station's robotic arms. Atlantis also will
return station crew member Nicole Stott to Earth, making the
mission the final scheduled space shuttle crew rotation
flight.

Northwestern Univ. doctor to make history
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - A Northwestern University physician
is to become the first orthopedic surgeon to orbit the Earth
when he lifts off on space shuttle Atlantis. Dr. Robert
Satcher will be aboard Atlantis Monday at 2:28 p.m. EST when
it starts its 11-day mission to the international space
station. Scheduled to take part in three spacewalks with
the rest of the STS-129 crew, Satcher will rely on his sur-
gical training in joint replacements to help repair two ro-
botic arms on the exterior of the space station. In addition,
the 44-year-old assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at
the university's Feinberg School of Medicine will also con-
duct medical experiments aboard the shuttle, investigating
the effects of outer space on the body's immune system,
changes in sitting height and bone formation in mice. Offic-
ials said Satcher will tweet his experiences at
www.twitter.com/astro_bones, as well as tweet about medical
issues for space exploration on www.twitter.com/ZeroG_MD.
Satcher has been on leave from Northwestern since he was
accepted into the NASA astronaut training program in 2004.
