------------------------------------------------------------

Good Morning,

NASA is still collecting data on Mars via its stuck Martian
rover. Even though it has been stuck for nine months, the
rover still gives readings and images. NASA plans, with the
help of the European Space Agency, to land a laboratory and
eventually humans on Mars to do further research. Read all
the details in the second article.

Until Next Time,
Erin

Dog genes valuable in human research

SEATTLE - Understanding genetic variations in dogs could
shed light on some diseases in people, researchers at the
University of Washington said. For example, mutations attri-
buted to diseases that cause skin to thicken and fold in
people are found in the same gene that gives shar-pei dogs
their wrinkly skin, said Joshua Akey, a genome scientist at
the university. Akey and his Seattle team identified 155
locations in the genetic code of 10 dog breeds that play a
role in giving those breeds their distinctive appearance.
In the shar-pei, the gene HAS2 makes an enzyme key to the
production of skin, Akey and his colleagues wrote in an
article published Monday in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences. "There was probably a mutation," Akey
said, "that arose in that gene that led to a really wrinkly
puppy and a breeder said, 'hey, that looks interesting, I'm
going to try to selectively breed this trait and make more
of these dogs.'"

NASA plans for Mars laboratory

HOUSTON - The Mars rover known as Spirit may be permanently
stuck in the sand but remains of value for scientific explor-
ation, NASA officials said. The rover program was launched in
2004 with Spirit and Opportunity landing on opposite sides of
the planet for what was to be three months of exploration.
Opportunity still roams the planet while Spirit became stuck
in sand about nine months ago. The latest attempts to free
Spirit sunk it even deeper in the Martian soil, said Doug
McCuistion, head of NASA's Mars Exploration Program. Even
stationary, Spirit can record and send data and images on
weather and seismology while NASA prepares for next year's
launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which to arrive on
Mars in 2012, McCuistion told CNN in a story published Tues-
day. Data from the Mars laboratory would be valuable for a
planned venture to merge NASA's Mars program with that of the
European Space Agency for joint missions beginning in 2016,
including eventual human travel to Mars, NASA said.

Worms aid understanding of stem cells

MADISON, Wis. - The study of simple roundworms is helping
explain the stem cell's ability to develop into any cell
type in the body, scientists in Wisconsin said. Using the
small roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, scientists at the
University of Wisconsin in Madison are learning about the
biological workings that control the maturation process of
stem cells. A network of regulatory factors maintains a
stable pool of stem cells while launching a second pool of
cells on the path toward maturing into differentiated cells
with specific functions, university biochemist Judith Kimble
wrote in this week's edition of the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences. Regulation of the transition
from stem cell to mature cell is important because a disrup-
tion of the balance between the two states could lead to
tumors or an inability to maintain healthy tissue, she said.
Many of the same molecules in worms control stem cell devel-
opment in humans and are involved in aberrant conditions,
such as leukemia and other cancers, Kimble said.
