NASA and Chrysler to explore technologies

WASHINGTON - The U.S. space agency says it has signed an
agreement with Chrysler Group LLC that might put rocket
science on the road and automotive science in space. NASA
said the collaboration will seek to use technologies orig-
inally developed for human spaceflight to enhance future
vehicles and adapt advanced automotive technology for use
in space. "Through its Innovative Partnerships Program,
NASA has entered into a non-reimbursable Space Act Agreement
with Chrysler ? to coordinate technology development and
pursue partnership opportunities in areas such as mobility
systems, advanced materials and wireless technologies," the
space agency said in a statement. "The goal of the agreement
is to advance technologies in areas of common technical
interest by leveraging each organization's skills and exper-
tise." NASA said some of the areas to be reviewed include
materials engineering, robotics, radar and battery systems.
NASA said it has worked with the Chrysler Group on previous
space ventures. In 1961, Chrysler built Redstone rockets for
the Mercury Project that put the first American in space.
Also, Chrysler built boosters to power the first two Apollo
spacecraft, launching Apollo 7 into Earth orbit and Apollo 8
on its way to the moon.

Breakthrough reported in stem cell studies

LA JOLLA, Calif. - U.S. scientists say they have solved the
decade-old mystery of why human embryonic stem cells are so
difficult to culture in the laboratory. Researchers at the
Scripps Research Institute in California said their findings
are expected to provide scientists with useful new tech-
niques, moving the field closer to the day when stem cells
can be used for therapeutic purposes. "This paper addresses
a long-standing mystery," said Associate Professor Sheng
Ding, senior author of the study. "Scientists have been
puzzled by why human embryonic stem cells die at a critical
step in the culture process. In addition to posing a ques-
tion in fundamental biology, this created a huge technical
challenge in the lab." In the study, the team discovered
two synthetic small molecule drugs (named Thiazovivin and
Pyrintegrin) can be added to a human stem cell culture and
each individually prevent the death of the cells. The team
said it also unraveled the mechanisms by which the compounds
promote stem cell survival, shedding light on a previously
unknown aspect of stem cell biology. "The current techniques
to keep these cells alive are tedious and labor-intensive,"
said Ding. "Keeping the cells alive is so difficult that
some people are discouraged from entering the field. It is
very frustrating experience for everyone." The complex re-
search is reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.

New way found to recover nanoparticles

BRISTOL, England - British scientists say they have developed
a method that might make it easier for manufacturers to re-
cover, recycle and reuse nanoparticles. The researchers, led
by Professor Julian Eastoe of the University of Bristol,
said their technique could speed application of nanotech-
nology in new generations of solar cells, flexible electronic
displays and other products. Eastoe said scientists have
been seeking better ways to recover and reuse tiny nanopart-
icles, but recovering and recycling nanoparticles is espec-
ially difficult because they tend to form complex, hard-to-
separate mixtures with other substances. The researchers said
they developed a special type of microemulsion -- a mixture
of oil and water -- that might solve the problem. In labora-
tory tests using cadmium and zinc nanoparticles, they showed
how the oil and water in the microemulsion separated into
two layers when heated. One layer contained nanoparticles
that could be recovered and the other contained none. The
separation process is reversible and the recovered particles
retain their shape and chemical properties, which is crucial
for their reuse, the scientists said. The research appears
in the American Chemical Society journal Langmuir.

Study links complex traits with genes

PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton University researchers say they
have developed a new method of identifying hidden genetic
material that is responsible for complex traits. The scien-
tists led by Professor Leonid Kruglyak say their achievement
might lead to a deeper understanding of how multiple genes
interact to produce everything from blue eyes to blood
pressure problems. The researchers said their method allows
them to study millions of yeast cells at the same time. That
enables the identification of regions of the genome that
cause a specific trait in the offspring of two yeast strains
that have been mated. In using such a large group, the sci-
entists say they've been able to identify subtle patterns
that could not previously have been detected. "One of the
important insights gained from research enabled by the
sequencing of the human genome is that, rather than being
obvious, the connections between genes and most traits are
very complicated," Kruglyak said. "Our results show, however,
that it is possible to identify many of the factors under-
lying complex traits using straightforward techniques." He
said the finding could help illuminate the answers to the
current difficulties inherent in tying traits to genes. The
research is reported in the April 15 edition of the journal
Nature.
