Good Morning,

Space scientists are puzzled by a discovery made by an
active Mars rover; a strange coating on some rocks. Read
all about why this coating is inconsistent and strange in
the middle segment.

Until Next Time,

Early galaxy had 'teenage growth spurt'

DURHAM, England - A British-led international team of sci-
entists says it has discovered a massive galaxy in the early
universe experiencing rapid growth. The researchers, led by
Durham University, said the galaxy created stars similar to
our sun, but at as much as 100 times faster than the modern
Milky Way -- a rate the equivalent of 250 suns per year. The
study's lead author, Mark Swinbank of Durham University's
Institute for Computational Cosmology, said, "This galaxy is
like a teenager going through a growth spurt." Due to the
amount of time it takes light to reach Earth, the scientists
said they are observing the galaxy as it would have appeared
10 billion years ago -- just 3 billion years after the Big
Bang. "We don't fully understand why the stars are forming
so rapidly but our results suggest that stars formed much
more efficiently in the early universe than they do today,"
Swinbank said. The research is reported in the online early
edition of the journal Nature.

New stem cell growth factor found

DURHAM, N.C. - U.S. scientists say they've identified a new
growth factor that stimulates the expansion and regeneration
of hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells. Duke University
Medical Center researchers say their discovery might help
overcome one of the most frustrating barriers to cellular
therapy -- the fact that stem cells are so few in number and
so stubbornly resistant to expansion. "Unfortunately, there
are no soluble growth factors identified to date that have
been proven to expand human stem cells for therapeutic purp-
oses," said Dr. John Chute, who led the study. But Chute,
working with Heather Himburg, a post-doctoral fellow in his
laboratory, discovered adding pleiotrophin, a naturally
occurring growth factor, stimulated a ten-fold expansion of
stem cells taken from the bone marrow of a mouse. They said
they also found pleiotrophin increased the numbers of human
umbilical cord blood stem cells in culture that were capable
of engraftment in immune-deficient mice. "Perhaps more impor-
tantly, systemic treatment with pleiotrophin may have the
potential to accelerate recovery of the blood and immune
system in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy,"
Chute said. The study is reported in the journal Nature Med-
icine.

Mars rock coatings puzzle scientists

PASADENA, Calif. - U.S. space scientists say a strange
coating on Mars rocks discovered by the rover Opportunity
near a crater has left them puzzled. NASA said the rover
spent six weeks investigating a crater dubbed Concepcion
that was flagged in advance as a study target because it
appears to be young. The scientists said rocks ejected from
the impact that formed the crater are chunks of the same
type of bedrock Opportunity has seen at hundreds of locations
since landing in January 2004 -- soft, sulfate-rich sandstone
holding harder peppercorn-size dark spheres like berries in
a muffin. NASA said the spheres, rich in iron, gained the
nickname "blueberries." "It was clear from the images that
Opportunity took on the approach to Concepcion that there
was strange stuff on lots of the rocks near the crater,"
said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, principal investi-
gator for Opportunity. "There's dark, grayish material
coating faces of the rocks and filling fractures in them. At
least part of it is composed of blueberries jammed together
as close as you could pack them. We've never seen anything
like this before." While scientists continue to ponder the
new images, Opportunity is again moving toward its long-term
destination, Endeavour Crater, which is now about a 7-mile
drive. "We want to get to Endeavour with a healthy rover,"
said Squyres. "It takes a compelling target for us to stop
and study. And Concepcion was a compelling target."

ESA: Video gaming may aid the space agency

PARIS - The European Space Agency says it has found video
gaming can benefit the space agency's aims in a number of
ways. The ESA's Technology Observatory, tasked with looking
for developments with potential for spin-in or joint re-
search, says it found potential applications in various
online game-playing technologies, from the simplest content-
oriented games to multiplayer online virtual worlds. For
example, researchers said immersive environments based on
the technologies could enhance collaborative working of pro-
ject scientists and engineers. The ESA study also recognized
that exciting online games could prove an excellent tool for
promoting space and supporting the teaching of science, tech-
nology, engineering and mathematics. The ESA study recommends
looking into public-private partnerships that would be self-
financing, enabling online games operators to invest in
development, support and game content, building upon tech-
nical and scientific expertise provided by the space agency.
Funding for the research was provided by the ESA's General
Studies Program.
