Good Morning,

Scientists in Tennessee are giving an energy efficient make-
over to some older houses and other structures. Read all
about this innovative procedure and the resulting energy bill
difference in the second article.

Until Next Time,

TacSat-4 spacecraft ready for launch

WASHINGTON - U.S. Navy scientists say they've completed en-
vironmental and performance testing on the TacSat-4 space-
craft payload and the satellite is ready for launch. Offic-
ials at the Naval Research laboratory said the satellite,
originally due for launch this fall, has been re-scheduled
for liftoff in August. "TacSat-4 is a Navy led joint mission
to augment current satellite communications capabilities and
to advance operationally responsive space systems," officials
said in a statement. The TacSat-4 mission was selected by a
vote of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and U.S. Strategic
Command flag and general officers. The scientists said the
satellite will provide 10 ultra high frequency channels that
can be used for any combination of communications. TacSat-4
is to be placed in an orbit that augments geosynchronous
satellite communications by providing near global, but not
continuous, coverage including the high latitudes. Navy
scientists said the satellite also will provide communi-
cations for moving radios without requiring antenna pointing
and will allow dynamic reallocation to different theaters
worldwide, thereby enabling rapid communication augmentation
when unexpected operations or natural events occur. The
spacecraft and its communications payload are now in storage
awaiting the launch date.

Deep energy retrofit home research planned

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - Scientists at Oak Ridge National Labora-
tory in Tennessee say they plan to conduct a series of deep
energy retrofit home research projects. Deep energy retro-
fits are renovations to existing structures that use the
latest in energy-efficient materials and technologies and
result in significant energy reductions, said Jeff Christian,
the ORNL buildings technologies researcher heading the pro-
ject. He said at least 10 homes across the Tennessee region
will be sought to participate. Although homeowners will have
to pay most of the costs -- about $10 per square foot of
living space -- Christian said the costs can be recovered in
as little as 10 years, with energy bills potentially cut in
half. "We're targeting homes that are 15-35 years old,"
Christian said, "homes that are ready for new windows,
heating and cooling units, appliances and maybe even solar
panels to push their homes closer to near-zero energy con-
sumption." Christian said results of all of the retrofits
will be available online, showing detailed data on the costs
and benefits of the retrofits. "We're hoping that this dem-
onstration stimulates enough interest among members of the
public that it will become self-sustaining -- growing the
number of houses with deep retrofits," he said. The Univer-
sity of Tennessee-Battelle manages Oak Ridge National Lab-
oratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

New stem cell technology developed

JERUSALEM - Scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
say they have developed a new stem cell technology that helps
bone fractures heal quickly. The technology that involves
isolation of the stem cells from bone marrow was developed
by Drs. Zulma Gazit and Gadi Pelled, along with Professor
Dan Gazit at the university's Skeletal Biotechnology Labora-
tory. The scientists say their technology has been success-
fully used to treat complicated fractures in seven patients
at the Hadassah University Hospital in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem.
Currently, the standard treatment for severe bone loss in-
volves either amputation or a prolonged period of disability.
The scientists said their new technology, called immuno-iso-
lation, sorts mesenchymal stem cells from other cells re-
siding in a bone marrow sample, using a specific antibody.
The immuno-isolated cells then can be immediately used to
form new bone tissue when implanted in laboratory animals,
without a prolonged incubator growth period. The researchers
said they expect the technique will eventually extend to
treating other skeletal injuries, such as degenerated inter-
vertebral discs or torn tendons. The study was reported in
the journal Stem Cells.
