May 11, 2010

Greetings,

Action buffs, this week is for you! If you are sick of all
the sappy vampire dramas, you and I are in the same boat.
However, 'Daybreakers' takes a whole new perspective on the
vampire genre, pushing the true potential for what has not
been done with the category. Also this week, Mel Gibson
plays a senior city cop seeking revenge on the death of his
daughter in 'Edge of Darkness'.

'Daybreakers' DVD

Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe star in this slightly unusual
vampire movie that was written and directed by the Australian
twins Peter and Michael Spierig. Here vampires have already
proliferated to the point where they dominate the world, but
these immortal beings are facing a blood shortage because
they have made humans into an endangered species. Edward
Dalton (Hawke) is a vampire with a conscience who meets a
small band of humans that includes a man called Elvis
(Dafoe). Elvis may have found a cure for vampirism, and
Edward sets out to help the humans.

This is an over-the-top fantasy-horror film with a cast
that includes Paul Bettany, Lucas Black, Dennis Quaid and
Adrianne Palicki. The premise is that God has become deeply
dissatisfied with humankind and decided to kill all the
people in the world. Most of the movie takes place in a road-
side diner out in the desert. It turns out the Archangel
Michael (Bettany) has gone rogue, and when the attempt begins
to kill the handful of people in the diner, Michael defends
