Mark 8:34-37

When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples
also, He said to them, "Whoever desires to come after Me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will
save it.

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world,
and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange
for his soul?"

Greetings Bible Enthusiast!

A reader, Francesca, asked what the Bible means when it says,
"Die to self." Jesus answered that question when He prayed
in the Garden shortly before He was arrested, "Not my will,
Father, but Yours."

Jesus was willing to die for us even though it went against
every self-preservation instinct he had as a man. We know,
as a result of that agonized prayer, that He did not want
to be tortured and killed, but he did it willingly because
it was the will of His Father.

We also must be willing to do whatever it takes to do the
will of our Heavenly Father as well. (See Bible verse below.)

But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously
practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people
of Samaria, claiming that he was something great...

Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized
he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the
miracles and signs which were done.

Acts 8:9-13

As the story continues, Simon becomes poisoned by his
greed for the power of the Holy Spirit and asks Peter if
he can buy the power to bestow the Holy Spirit on others.
He is rebuked by Peter, and goes on to ask for prayer to
help him repent.

The Bible does not tell us the end of this man's story,
but the lust for power sounds just as familiar in our
modern day setting.
