Do's & Don'ts of Hair Washing

Needless to say, washing our hair is a pretty important part
of hygiene. Some of us wash our tresses everyday while others
stick to every other day or twice a week. Regardless of what
your schedule is, it is important that you are aware of the
right way and the wrong way to tackle this seemingly common
sense routine. Even the smallest actions can end up harming
our hair in the long run. To make sure that you do right by
your hair, you?ll want to make note of the following do's and
don?ts.

Have you ever gotten irritated by using your fingers to
detangle your hair once you?ve gotten it wet in the shower?
This simple act can actually do more harm to your hair than
good. Not only does this action detangle your hair, which is
good for you, it successfully pulls out many healthy hairs
that are not ready to be shed yet, which is bad for you. Over
time this can lead to a significant amount of your hair going
down the drain instead of staying on your scalp. To avoid this,
detangle your hair while it is dry before stepping into the
shower to wash it. This will make your hair less prone to more
tangles and makes it easier to thoroughly wash and condition
your tresses.

One of the most common actions you probably take when washing
your hair is to put your shampoo and then scrunch your locks up
on top of your head and vigorously lather the shampoo in. This
is another don?t. The best way to work your shampoo in without
causing damage to your hair is by applying the shampoo to the
palms of your hands, rubbing them together and then placing it
on your scalp and working your way down in one sweeping motion.
Doing this distributes the shampoo more evenly throughout your
scalp.

One of the most important things to know about human hair is
that when it is wet it is at its most vulnerable. So you?ll
need to make an effort to avoid tangling, pulling, tugging or
putting any added tension during the time that you are washing
your hair. Another fact to take note of when it comes to your
tresses is that the temperature of the water you use also has
an effect on your hair. When you use warm water it causes the
cuticles of your hair to open, which allows it to be properly

cleansed of any oil or dirt. Cold water closes the cuticles
back up, which results in added shine. That being said, it is
okay to wash and condition your tresses using warm water but
before stepping out of the shower give your hair a shot of cold
water to properly close up your cuticles. This will give you a
natural shine.
