Raiders long snapper Condo added to Pro Bowl

Oakland Raiders long snapper Jon Condo has been added to
the AFC Pro Bowl roster. Condo was picked as a "need" player
for the Jan. 31 game on Tuesday. He becomes the third Raiders
player selected to the Pro Bowl, joining cornerback Nnamdi
Asomugha and punter Shane Lechler. Condo has been a reliable
snapper in three seasons for Oakland. He joined the Raiders
as a practice squad player late in the 2006 season. He played
three games for Dallas in 2005.

Fichtner takes over as Steelers' QBs coach

Randy Fichtner is switching roles on the Pittsburgh Steelers'
coaching staff, taking over as quarterbacks coach after
previously coaching the wide receivers. Ken Anderson, the
quarterbacks coach the last three seasons under coach Mike
Tomlin, retired at the end of the season. Fichtner coached
the quarterbacks at Memphis from 1990-93 and from 2001-06,
when he also was the offensive coordinator. He was the
quarterbacks coach at Arkansas State from 1997-2000, when
he first worked with Tomlin. Fichtner also coached at Purdue,
where he was in charge of recruiting besides coaching the
wide receivers. He joined Tomlin's staff in 2007.

Deuce McAllister retiring from football

Deuce McAllister has decided to retire from pro football, ending
an injury-plagued eight-year career in which he rewrote the
New Orleans Saints' rushing records. McAllister hasn't played
since 2008 but briefly rejoined the New Orleans Saints last
week to serve as an honorary captain for the club's playoff
victory over Arizona on Saturday. McAllister confirmed his
plans to retire to The Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon
and the Saints announced soon after in a one-sentence e-mail
that McAllister had been placed on the team's reserve-retired
list. The move opens up an active roster spot for the Saints,
who host Minnesota in the NFC championship game on Sunday
evening. The Saints were off on Tuesday and the club did not
announce any new roster additions. The 31-year-old McAllister
was drafted in the first round by New Orleans in 2001. At
6-foot-1, 230 pounds, he was a punishing runner who could
move piles. He also possessed the agility to make tacklers
miss in the open field. He grew up near Jackson, Miss., an
area dominated by Saints fans, played at the University of
Mississippi and became one of the most popular players in
franchise history. The Louisiana Superdome crowd routinely let
out elongated howls of, "Doooo-se," whenever the Saints were
setting up their offense near an opponents' end zone. Fans
even did so a couple times on Saturday. McAllister is the
Saints' career rushing leader with 6,096 yards. His 55 total
touchdowns and 49 rushing TDs also are club records. However,
he needed reconstructive surgery to repair serious knee
injuries in 2005 and 2007, and struggled to regain his form
after the second operation. McAllister's was the only Saints
player to have four 1,000-yard seasons as a rusher, the last
coming in 2006, when he helped New Orleans advance to the
franchise's first NFC championship game. He was named to
Pro Bowls after the 2002 and 2003 seasons. As his football
career flourished, McAllister diversified his business
interests, opening car dealerships in Jackson, purchasing
a stake in the McAlister's Deli chain and investing in the
restoration of the historic King Edward Hotel in downtown
Jackson. Last year, however, one of his car dealerships
went into bankruptcy and closed. McAllister maintains a
residence in the New Orleans area and plans to remain with
the Saints in an unofficial capacity throughout the playoffs.

Jones indicates Phillips back in 2010

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is giving every indication
that he is picking up coach Wade Phillips' contract option
for the 2010 season, and likely keeping him longer. "We don't
have any funny business here guys. There's nothing funny going
on here, at all," Jones said Tuesday. "We just want to do this
when we both can do it and both get it stated the way we want
to state it." Standing on the field where next season's Super
Bowl will be played, after a spectacular news conference
announcing a March 13 boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and
Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium, Jones said that he had a
"good visit" with Phillips on Monday. As for Phillips' coming
back for his fourth season, and maybe more after that, Jones
said he would answer all those questions at a season wrapup
news conference later in the week with "both him and me there."
The Cowboys have not yet scheduled that news conference.
Jones later told ESPN, though, that he was working out details
of what to do besides picking up the option, "but I want
(Phillips) back." The Cowboys owner had earlier refused to
specifically discuss the status of Phillips' contract.
"Really, I don't want to say anything about that until we can
get into a little more of the details. I don't want it stated
one way or another, the structure of it," Jones said then.
"I'll have more detail about where we are, what we're doing
and that kind of thing. ... We are working through our
business and team business." Jones has indicated the last
few weeks that everything was pointed to Phillips returning.
Asked if that was still the case, Jones responded "yes"
without elaborating. The Cowboys clinched their second NFC
East title in three seasons under Phillips and won a playoff
game for the first time since the 1996 season, beating
Philadelphia 34-14 at home in the wildcard playoffs a week
after a 24-0 victory over the Eagles in the regular season
finale to win the division. Dallas' season ended with a
34-3 loss at Minnesota last weekend. Dallas is 34-17 under
Phillips, playoffs included. Only three NFL teams have won
more games in that span. It also gives him the highest
winning percentage of all coaches in team history.
This past season, Phillips also became the team's
defensive coordinator and the unit was among the league's
best. The playoff victory was his first as a head coach.

Dolphins hire Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator

Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's stay on the NFL job market
was brief. The Miami Dolphins hired Nolan on Tuesday, less than
24 hours after the announcement he was leaving the Denver
Broncos after one season. Nolan replaces Paul Pasqualoni, fired
after the Miami defense backslid in his second season. The
Dolphins also announced the hiring of former New York Giants
assistant coach Bill Sheridan as inside linebackers coach.
Nolan spent four seasons as head coach of the San Francisco
49ers, where he went 18-37 before being fired midway through
the 2008 season. He has made five stops as an NFL defensive
coordinator: Denver, Baltimore (2002-04), the New York Jets
(2000), Washington (1997-99) and the New York Giants (1993-96).
Bill Parcells, the Dolphins' football czar, had the same job
with the Jets when Nolan worked there. Nolan became available
after the Dolphins' courtships of Al Groh and Keith Butler
failed to produce an agreement. Groh became defensive coordinator
at Georgia Tech, and Butler decided to remain with the Pittsburgh
Steelers as linebackers coach. Miami coach Tony Sparano favors
a 3-4 defense, and Nolan converted the Broncos last year to
that scheme. Denver improved to seventh in the NFL in defense
from 29th in 2008, but the team faded badly and missed the
postseason for a fourth consecutive year In their final four
games, the Broncos gave up 122 points. Still, Nolan's departure
was a surprise, and the reason for the split with coach
Josh McDaniels was unknown. The Dolphins also missed the
playoffs at 7-9. They ranked 22nd in defense and were prone
to giving up big plays. Miami allowed a franchise-record
140 points in the fourth quarter, most in the NFL. And in
the final three games, desperate to stay in the playoff
race, the Dolphins fell behind 24-6, 27-0 and 27-10.
Now that the Dolphins have a new defensive coordinator, they
can intensify their shopping for linebackers and a free safety.
Linebackers Jason Taylor and Joey Porter and nose tackle Jason
Ferguson, all in their 30s, are among those who might not be
back in 2010.
