Diabetic Digest - Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Readers:

My wife has been sick for the last 3 weeks. She started
out with a cough and ended up with a rather stubborn case
of bronchitis. Don't worry, she's much better now.

The weird thing was while she was sick, I wasn't. I didn't
even get the sniffles. I just thought that due to the
circumstances I would be in the same boat as her. Usually
with diabetes the quality of your immune system depends on
the quality of your health. The better your health and the
better control you have on your diabetes the better your
immune system will function.

I guess what I'm getting at is that my health, my control,
my lifestyle, I must be doing something right. I must be
taking better care of myself than I think I am, but that
doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement.

Staying healthy is a constant battle. It requires constant
attention and maintenance, kind of little a puppy. And as
of right now, my puppy's tail is wagging away, and it's my
job to keep that tail wagging and avoid getting bit.

Regards,
Steve

Breast-Feeding for Less Than 1 Month Linked to Increased
Risk for Type 2 Diabetes
by Laurie Barclay
Medscape

Breast?feeding for less than one month has been linked to
an increased risk for type 2 diabetes in a study reported
in the American Journal of Medicine.

The study looked at the associations between duration?
exclusivity, and consistency of lactation with the risk
for type 2 diabetes in a cohort of 2?233 women? aged 40
to 78 years. Researchers controlled for age? parity? race?
education? hysterectomy? physical activity? tobacco and
alcohol use? family history of diabetes? and body?mass
index. Within the study sample? 1?828 women were mothers.
Compared with nulliparous women? those who consistently
breast?fed all of their children for at least one month
had a similar adjusted risk for type 2 diabetes. Compared
with mothers who exclusively breast?fed for one to three
months? mothers who never exclusively breast?fed were
more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The study authors
concluded? "Risk of type 2 diabetes increases when term
pregnancy is followed by less than one month of lactation?
independent of physical activity and body?mass index in
later life. Mothers should be encouraged to exclusively
breast?feed all of their infants for at least one month."
