Diabetic Digest - Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Readers:
I'm off to see my doctor on Thursday. I've been feeling
good since my last visit, but for the last few weeks I've
noticed a pain in my left foot. I know that I've written
extensively about the importance of foot care for those
living with diabetes. Again I just want to reiterate to
you not to take your health, safety and well-being for
granted.
I may have run this very important video clip before, but
I'm going to show it again because I think it's even more
appropriate at this time.
Most people know that diabetes affects the blood sugar.
But few are aware of the disease's effects on the feet!
If you're diabetic, here's why you'll want to keep tabs
on your toes.

Please watch, take care of yourself, and enjoy the rest
of today's Diabetic Digest.

Diabetes Expert Stresses Portion Control, Exercise
by Angela Ward
Longview News-Journal
Consuming child?sized portions and increasing exercise are
a couple of ways to reduce diabetes risk? according to
dietitian Kit McKinney.
"While fast food meals aren't ideal? even dietitians
recognize there are times when swinging into the drive?
thru is the only available option?" McKinney said. "In
those cases? we advise our clients to order something
like a small hamburger and a side order of fresh fruit."
McKinney pointed out that there are no foods that are
completely off?limits to patients with diabetes. Instead,
portion control is the key? as is higher consumption of
fruits? vegetables? whole grains? lean proteins, fish, and
healthy fats. Restaurant portions are often distorted?
giving people the wrong idea of an appropriate serving.
McKinney noted that the average age of people diagnosed
with diabetes is getting lower? and her clients range in
age from teens to 40 and older. People who may have pre-
diabetes should be tested by a physician? though doctors
often send patients to diabetes educators specifically to
learn better disease management.
