Diabetic Digest - April 29, 2015

Readers:

I've been dealing with a head cold for a week or so and it's been playing havoc with my blood sugar. It seems like no matter how much or how little insulin or food I consume my numbers are still sky-high.

The good thing is that this only happens when I'm sick so it's the ultimate confirmation. This usually happens before the signs of illness show themselves - so I can brace myself for what's to come.

Don't you hate spring colds?

Regards,
Steve

Virtual Diabetes Education Shows Promise
By Miriam E. Tucker

Future diabetes self-management education could occur in the virtual world, a new study suggests. Eighty-nine low-income African American women with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to either eight weeks of face-to-face group sessions or the same program delivered by the same health care providers in an online virtual world. While some outcomes were better with face-to-face sessions, including glucose control and depression, the virtual program helped participants exercise more and better stick to a medication regimen. It was $186 more expensive to treat a person in the online versus real world, but costs are likely to drop as both technology and Internet access improve, the researchers say.
