Diabetic Digest - Wednesday, July 13, 2011Readers: I'm headed out to see my doctor. I'm due for an A1C blood test just to make sure that my blood-sugar is staying where it should and making sure that I'm not headed for any problems. I'm sure you know by now that I get this taken care of every three months. It's always important to have your A1C on a regular basis. I'm glad I do and I'm sure you do as well. It's always better to be up on things rather that playing the 'coulda, woulda, shoulda' game.
I better get going. I'll let you know how it went in the next issue.
Regards,

Generex Biotechnology CorporationbizWatch Generex Biotechnology Corporation Latest from The Business Journals Lenexa's Global Medical Direct sells a majority stake to Generex Biotechnology Follow this company (OTCBB: GNBT) has announced positive preliminary results from two Phase 3 clinical trials testing the effectiveness of its potential treatment for diabetes, using oral insulin.
Toronto-based Generex is the parent company of Worcester, Mass.-based Antigen Express. The trials on the drug candidate, called Oral-lyn, included 463 Type 1 diabetes patients and the other trial included 31 obese patients with Impaired Glucose Tolerance, which is a pre-diabetes symptom. Taken at meal-time, Oral-lyn reduced the rise in blood glucose by one third at two hours and one fourth at three hours, Generex executives said. Oral-lyn also showed promising results on other key endpoints.
"Both of these studies confirm the value of Generex Oral-lyn in the two major types of diabetes," Generex VP of Medical Affairs Dr. Gerald Bernstein said in a statement. "For people with Type 1 there is an opportunity to replace or supplement bolus injections affording greater compliance in reaching their goals. For the millions of people with Pre-diabetes it provides an additional tool to control postprandial glucose and delay the clinical onset of Type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk for complications. All of this will help alleviate the enormous economic burden of diabetes."
The company said the drug candidate was "not associated with serious hypoglycemia or other significant adverse events, body weight changes, or development of insulin antibodies."
Oral-lyn has so far been approved in Equador, India, Lebanon and Algeria, and is available to patients in the U.S. and Canada, prior to regulatory approval, as part of special access programs.
