Readers:
I have two and a half months to prepare for my complete
physical. It's been quite a while since my last one. My
doctor suggested it to me during my last visit.
I'm a bit conflicted though. I'm not sure if I should
start eating super healthy and exercising like crazy to
help better the findings of the physical or should I just
keep doing what I'm doing so the findings will be more
accurate.
Maybe I'll find a happy medium. I hope.

Progress Made on Artificial Pancreas for
[Patients With Diabetes]

Scientists are making advancements on an artificial
pancreas for children and adults with type 1 diabetes?
and they announced new technology at the 70th Scientific
Sessions of the American Diabetes Association this past
weekend.
There are three components to the artificial pancreas:
a continuous glucose monitor? an insulin pump? and a
computer program that can help the two devices communicate
to automate the process. The monitor and pump are already
available? as illustrated in a study published by The
Lancet? and can help control blood glucose levels during
sleep to reduce the chance of hypoglycemia in children
with type 1 diabetes. The latest presentation explained
that the system provided similar benefits for 12 adults?
ages 18 to 65 years? who ate a large meal and drank a
glass of white wine before bed. With this technology?
participants were within their target blood glucose range
70 percent of the time? compared to only 47 percent when
they did not use the technology.

Diabetic Recipe
Fresh Dill Dip
(makes about 1 quart)
2 cups (456 g) plain low-fat yogurt, drained
1 16-ounce (480 g) carton small-curd, low-fat cottage cheese
1/2 cup (32 g) chopped fresh dill
1 tablespoon (15 ml) grated onion
salt (optional) and freshly ground pepper to taste
1. In a large bowl, combine yogurt, cottage cheese, dill,
and onion. Season with salt (if using) and pepper. Cover
and chill until ready to serve.
2. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve alongside the
arrangement of crudités.
Per 2-tablespoon serving: 20 calories (18% calories from
fat), 3 g protein, trace total fat (0.2 g saturated fat),
2 g carbohydrates, 0 dietary fiber, 2 mg cholesterol,
