Good Morning,
New York has adopted the use of a specialized device that
ensures DUI violators can't get behind the wheel when intox-
icated. This device is already in use in some states, New
York being the twelfth. Read all the details on this device
and how, if ordered to use the gadget, you could be paying
way more than your freedoms to drink in the third article.
Until Next Time,
Erin

New monkey species discovered, only 250 are left
A Colombian monkey species that had long been rumored but
which scientists couldn't reach because of insurgent violence
in the remote area where it lives has finally been found ?
teetering on the brink of extinction. The new species of cat-
sized titi monkey was discovered in the Colombian Amazon by
researchers from the National University of Colombia, who
dubbed it Callicebus caquetensis. However it's not known how
long the species will last. The scientists estimate that only
250 of the monkeys are still alive, as their forest home is
being cut down to make way for farms. The monkeys live
Department of Caquetá, close to the border with Ecuador and
Peru. Evolutionary biologist Martin Moynihan saw the species
in the 1980s, but violence in the area kept researchers who
could confirm the discovery away until 2008, when scientists
Thomas Defler, Marta Bueno and Javier García were finally
able to travel to the upper Caquetá River, where they found
13 groups of the monkeys. The discovery is described in the
current issue of the journal Primate Conservation. The mon-
keys, called zogui zogui in Spanish, have one of the most
complex calls in the animal kingdom, which they use to mark
their territory.
Third spacewalk to fix cooling system
Two space station astronauts tackled another big spacewalk
repair job Monday to install a vital new pump in an attempt
to restore the International Space Station's ailing cooling
system back to full strength for the first time in more than
two weeks. It is the third of four repair spacewalks dedi-
cated for NASA astronauts Douglas Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell
Dyson, who plan to spend about 6 1/2 hours installing the
new ammonia coolant pump. The astronauts removed the faulty
pump during an earlier spacewalk on Aug. 11. The space stat-
ion's cooling system has been running at half strength since
July 31, when an electrical short shut down one of two pumps
that move liquid ammonia through the system. The failure
forced astronauts to turn off some experiments and systems,
as well as leave others without backups, in order to prevent
the station from overheating.
DUI detection device green lit in New York
If you?re convicted of driving while under the influence in
New York, you?ll be getting a gadget worth around $1,400.
But it?s not something you?ll be proudly showing off. A new
state law means anyone with a DWI conviction will be forced
to install an Ignition Interlock for a period determined by
the court. The device involves a computer and a mouthpiece,
with the driver having to blow into the mouthpiece each time
they start the car. The car will only start if their blood
alcohol level is below 0.025, which could be triggered by a
single drink. As well as breathalyzing drivers at the start
of the trip, the device will sound an alarm at random inter-
vals, forcing the driver to pull over, switch off the engine
and take the breath test again. If they don?t do so without
a set time, the vehicle will only continue working until the
engine next shuts down. In the event that the driver repeat-
edly fails a breath test, they?ll have five days to take it
in for a reset (which carries a further fee) or face the
vehicle being permanently disabled. The device also comes
with a camera, designed to make sure only the driver provides
the breath sample. Anyone caught giving a false sample will
face misdemeanor charges.
