GopherArchives****-- Obama dedicates new memorial to disabled veterans --*WASHINGTON (UPI) - President Obama dedicated a new memorial to America's disabled veterans Sunday, calling it a reminder of the lasting sacrifices of men and women in the U.S. armed forces.
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial features reflecting pools, bronze and glass panels, and a star-shaped fountain with five points representing each branch of the military.
Located on the National Mall accross from the U.S. Botanic Garden, the memorial is 16 years in the making. It required $80 million in private donations -- including $10 million from philanthropist Lois Pope, who co-founded the organization collecting the donations.
The president spoke to hundreds of disabled veterans, advocates and government officials at the dedication, saying that the memorial was a reminder of America's obligations.
"Let us never rush into war," he said, "because it's America's sons and daughters that bear the scars."
The dedication comes just a day after the Department of Defense posted a video of the president thanking U.S. troops and veterans for their efforts in the war against Islamic State, a new security agreement in Afghanistan and deployments to Africa in response to the Ebola crisis.
