*-- Democratic Rep.: Members of Congress are 'underpaid' --*

WASHINGTON - Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., complains in an interview with CQ Roll Call that members of Congress are very "underpaid."

"I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid," said Moran. "I understand that it's widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world."

Members of Congress make $174,000 a year and have their travel and work-related expenses paid for by the American tax dollar. The members do often have to pay for two homes, with one in their district and one in Washington D.C.

Moran says that some of his fellow members sleep in their offices or live in tiny apartments when they are working at the Capitol, and their current pay doesn't allow them to "live decently in Washington."

Moran might feel this way, but it's unlikely that a majority of the American people do. Congress has hit their lowest approval ratings ever in the past year. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is holding steady at 6.7 percent with a widening inequality gap.

The average household income in Washington D.C. is $86,680, and though it is one of the highest in the U.S., it is well below $174,000.
