Monday, September 30, 2013Good morning crew,
We had quite a little Oktoberfest this weekend. The wife and I, old Mason and a couple other friends kicked things off at the official Oktoberfest which was sponsored by one of the big churches downtown (because when you think of beer and bratwurst you think of the Catholic Church).
That was fun to start. We had several beers, a couple of brats, and there was even a stand selling authentic, Serbian Cevapcici. I was a little disappointed with the music, though. I was expecting traditional Oktoberfest music, but they had a big rock-and-roll band blasting out Bon Jovi covers.
They didn't play "Ein Prosit" once!
As it got along toward evening the fest got more crowded until we took a vote and decided to move our little party to a German restaurant further downtown called The Chicago Brauhaus.
The minute we walked in the door we found a 3-piece band decked out in lederhosen and alpine hats leading a conga line around the absolutely packed dining room. I immediately cut in the middle of it, of course, which led me around the room to the stage where the band leader selected me, along with 5 other conga-liners, to participate in a yodeling contest! I lost.
Now that is how you start off a dining experience.
Despite eating at the church Oktoberfest we all set to again on another round of food and drinks. There was a general feeling of "gemutlichkeit" in the room. I even taught the table next to us how to sing "Ein Prosit" and when to scream "eins, zwei, drei, g'suffa" at the top of their lungs.
And we even had to discipline and good sense to leave before we got kicked out, which is a nice change of pace for us.
Laugh it up,
Joe

***My wife cannot ride in a car without telling whoever is driving what to do, when to do it, etc. She is, bar none, the worst back seat driver in the world. I have long thought this, though she would deny it. She claimed she seldom, if ever made comments about my driving. I, of course, claimed the opposite. Now I have proof.
The other day we were headed for the mall and my daughter piped up, "Daddy, before you married Mommy, who told you how to drive?"
*-------------- Guaranteed to Roll Your Eyes --------------*I was working in a scrap yard during summer vacation at engineering university. I used to work repairing construction equipment.
One afternoon, I was taking apart a piling hammer that had some very large bolts holding it together. One of the nuts had corroded on to the bolt; to free it I started heating the nut with an oxy-acetylene torch. As I was doing this, one of the dimmest apprentices I have ever known came along. He asked me what I was doing. I patiently explained that if I heated the nut it would grow larger and release its grip on the bolt so I could then remove it.
"So things get larger when they get hot, do they?" he asked.
Suddenly, an idea flashed into my mind. "Yes," I said, "that's why days are longer in summer and shorter in winter."
There was a long pause, then his face cleared. "You know, I always wondered about that," he said.
