Good morning crew,
I read somewhere that sushi started out as the Japanese
equivalent of fast food. You see, hundreds of years ago
the way to preserve fish (a major food source in Japan
since the entire country is a bunch of islands) was to
pack it in salt and rice. This would allow it to ferment
in such a way that kept the fish edible.
When you wanted to eat the fish you would dig it out of
the salt and rice, eat the fish and throw the rest away.
Then along came the brilliant idea of adding vinegar to
the mixture. This increased the shelf life of the rice,
and eventually they discovered they could just eat the
rice right along with the fish. Since the rice and fish
were already mixed together, all they had to do was roll
it in a little dried seaweed and they had a handy finger
food they could sell from a cart on the side of the road.
Considering its humble beginnings, how is it that I spent
nearly a hundred dollars on sushi Friday night? Have you
ever spent a hundred dollars on a Big Mac attack or a run
to KFC?
Maybe it was the three bottles of hot saki the girlfriend
and I split. And when I say "bottles" I mean the porcelain
bottles they serve the stuff in, not bottles like wine
bottles.
Anyway, it was a very good meal. We went with a big group
of people and everybody else had hibachi. I thought that
sushi would be cheaper. Foolish me.
P.S. Before anybody writes in with an FYI, yes, I do know
that "sushi" technically refers to the vinegary rice the
fish is served with. But typically when we westerners talk
about sushi we're referring to the Maki, or rolls that
we're all familiar with.
Laugh it up,
Joe

Tired of having to balance his wife Cindy's checkbook, Mike
made a deal with her; he would look at it, but only after
she had spent a few hours trying to wrestle it into shape.
The following night, after spending hours poring over stubs
and figures, Cindy said proudly, "I've done it! I made it
balance!"
Impressed, Mike came over to take a look. "Let's see...
mortgage 850.00, electricity 70.50, phone 55.00." His brow
wrinkled as he read the last entry. "It says here ESP, $615.
What the heck is that?"
"Oh," she said, "That means, Error Some Place!"

After doctors set my broken arm and put a cast on it, I paid
the bill and went on my way. Shortly thereafter, I received
a bill from the hospital, this time for the $1.57 they claimed
I still owed.
Apparently to prove that this was a hospital with heart, they
included a payment book. It had me paying 3 cents a month for
four years.
